If Seminyak and Uluwatu feel as familiar as your own backyard and you can't bear another Canggu traffic jam, it's time to head off Bali's beaten path.
For such a small island, Bali is impressively diverse and there's much more to explore than its south golden shores.
Here are seven off-piste destinations to enrich your next trip to the Island of the Gods.
Munduk and Bedugul
The northern highlands showcase some of Bali's most lush and beautiful scenery. Nestled among bucolic hills and valleys, tropical jungle, multiple lakes and agricultural land are charming Munduk and Bedugul, offering panoramic views and a glimpse of rural Bali away from the traffic and crowds of the south.
Just bring a jumper, the climate is fresh.
Hike through the local rice paddies and visit Munduk's coffee plantations, and be sure to seek out some of the island's most spectacular waterfalls in this region – Munduk Falls, Banyumala Twin Falls, GitGit and Sekumpul.
You'll also find hot springs in the area, like Banjar hot springs, Batur Natural Hot Spring and Toya Devasya, all with healing mineral waters to soak away aches and pains.
Neighbouring Bedugul is known for its delicious strawberries (and you can go picking in season), and is where you'll find the Insta-famous Handara Golf & Resort gates. Visit Bali's famous water temple built in Tamblingan Lake, Pura Ulun Danu Bratan, and the Bali Botanic Gardens, which house an array of incredible flora from Banyan trees to cacti gardens.
Often referred to as 'Ubud a few decades ago', Sidemen (pronounced 'seed-eh-man') epitomises what most people envisage when they think of Bali – an infinity pool peering over misty rice fields framed by a towering volcano.
Located in east Bali's historic Karangasem regency, the verdant Sidemen region is known for its gorgeous rice field and volcano views, along with traditional villages and artisans like weavers and silversmiths.
Explore beautiful waterfalls like Gembleng, Jagasatru and Tukad Cepung. Take in imposing views of Mount Agung from multiple viewpoints, like Bukit Cinta, Bukit Tengah and Lahangan Sweet and join in traditional weaving and silversmithing workshops in town.
Visit important sites such as Tirta Gangga water palace and Besakih Great Temple, one of the six most holy sites in Bali. Take a guided hike through the serene rice fields, and get the heart rate pumping with top-tier rafting on the wild rapids of the Telaga Waja river.
Sidemen is also a great base to explore gems in the wider Karangasem regency, with Virgin Beach and Blue Lagoon Beach under an hour away.
Laidback east coast villages Amed and Candidasa (pronounced 'chan-dee-da-sa') are known for snorkelling, diving and taking it easy.
Amed's series of protected bays sit against the backdrop of Mount Agung, with black sand beaches and crystal clear waters with a 40-metre drop just 10 metres from shore, making it ideal for freediving and scuba diving.
Amed is just 30 minutes from the Temple Of Penataran Agung Lempuyang or the 'Gates of Heaven' if you're after that particular 'gram shot (but be warned of long lines), and it's easy to visit the royal Tirta Gangga water palace from here.
Candidasa sits on a lagoon full of water lillies that bloom in the morning. Sadly, the beach was destroyed in the 1970s after it was mined for resources, but Candi is still a popular spot for its serene ambience, nearby snorkelling and dive sites like Gili Tepekong, Mimpang, Biaha and Taket, and its mix of great eateries and stays, many with infinity pools overlooking the ocean.
Candidasa is also better located to enjoy the uncharacteristically white sands of Virgin Beach (head to the Pasir Putih end), and Blue Lagoon beach. And if surfing is your passion, there's an excellent left hand point break at Jasri beach.
Learning about ancient tradition is another standout opportunity this regency. Visit the working salt farms of Kusamba Beach and head into the hills to Tenganan, an ancient village belonging to the Bali Mula (mula meaning 'initial' or 'original' in Balinese), one of only a few indigenous villages remaining on the island.
If you yearn for the days of Bali old, where beaches were relatively untouched, surf breaks uncrowded and villages had but a couple of warungs, it's still possible to find a version of this up the west coast.
Balian and Medewi are beach villages backed by green rice terraces dotted with scenic palm groves, where there's not much to do but surf, practice yoga, watch the sunset and relax – and that's exactly the point. Medewi is a far cry from crowded Canggu. (Getty)
An hour and a half up the coast from Canggu (traffic depending), Balian feels a world away. It has a river-mouth break with a nice swell, and fun and consistent waves all year round. Take long beach walks on the almost deserted stretch of coast here, and be sure to explore the groves and bays, like Secret Bay, which is an incredible panoramic sunset spot.
Balian's atmosphere of mysticism also makes it special. On its sparkling black sands, yoga is popular and you'll often find an enchanting mist along the beach. But historically and culturally, Balinese people see water as a purifying and healing force, and the Balian river was one location locals would bring the sick and dying to be cleansed and healed.
Another 35 minutes up the coast is surfing hotspot, Medewi. It boasts the longest left-hander in Bali that attracts surfers keen for mellow rides up to 300 metres long. There's a right hander too, and opportunities for fishing and collecting shellfish at low tide at the surf point. Neighbouring beach Yeh Sumbul is also becoming another surfer fave.
Where to stay: Yama Balian is a top pick and right on the river, Pondok Pitaya is on the beach and organic farmstay Temuku Pupuan is up in the Balian hills. Affordable Istana Balian has great reviews. In Medewi, bon vivants will love boutique luxury hotel Lost Lindenberg. Umadewi Surf & Retreat and The Writer's Treehouse are other lovely options.
