Already a common stop for backpackers, it is becoming better known to tourists. On the 14th day of each lunar month, the town trades its electric lights for traditional colored lanterns. Sights include the Japanese Covered Bridge and the Quan Cong Temple. Let the town’s expert tailors make you some bespoke clothing.

I'm disappointed to see Bali ranked number two in the world again by TripAdvisor readers this week for the second year running. 

I thought for sure this year it would be number one after ranking number two last year.

What really surprised me is that Dubai is still holding onto the top spot.

After stopping over in Dubai many times in the past at the airport I decided last summer to stop over for three nights and actually see what Dubai has to offer with my Family of four. 

My conclusion was that while Dubai has its own unique appeal, it simply can't compare to the magic of Bali.

Why Bali Beats Dubai (and all other places)

Here are just a few reasons why I believe Bali deserves the top spot:

Climate: 

Dubai is scorching hot from June to October, making it virtually impossible to enjoy outdoor activities. For example, when we went to see the tallest building in the world, we are very disappointed when we could only stand outside for about two minutes before we fried in the desert heat over 40 degrees centigrade. taking a good photo was nearly impossible because nobody could stand still.

Bali, on the other hand, has a warm and tropical climate year-round, perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and exploring the island's many attractions.

Affordability: 

Dubai is a notoriously expensive city, especially for families. In Bali, you can find luxurious accommodations for a fraction of the price. I have a beautiful villa available for rent for just $150-$200 per night, which would cost you ten times that in Dubai.

4 bedroom, 5 bathroom, private large swimming pool. 30 seconds from the beach starts at $98 per couple.

Although I did enjoy skiing on a Dubai indoor slope, even though it was very expensive at $70 for two hours per person frankly, there was nothing else that interested my family and I.

I found that if I wanted to go out and walk on the beach of the marina, I had to do it at 6:00 AM in the morning to avoid sunstroke. 

In all fairness, it's not that's not that hot the other two-thirds of the year. 

But frankly, there's just nothing there that attracts somebody that likes nature. 

One day we had planned to go out on a recommendation from a friend to a remote Oasis and have dinner. And I looked out at the sky and it was so full of pollution I didn't even want to go out.

Activities: Alternatively Bali offers something for everyone, from world-class surfing and diving to stunning temples and rice paddies. There are also plenty of opportunities to experience the local culture, such as attending a traditional dance performance or taking a cooking class.






Natural beauty: Bali is simply a breathtakingly beautiful island. From the lush green rice paddies to the dramatic volcanic mountains, there's something to feast your eyes on everywhere you turn.


A Thriving Real Estate Market:

Bali's ranking on TripAdvisor is sure to attract even more tourists to the island in 2024, which is great news for the local economy. And as I always say, Bali's real estate market is directly proportional to tourist demand.

I've never seen the market hotter, especially in my area of Sanur. With new hospitals, malls, and a surge in baby boomer retirements, Bali is booming.
