With no direct flights to Bali from the US, what options are available to travel to the famous Indonesian island?
SUMMARY
Bali is a popular tourist destination but lacks direct US flights; travelers must book one-stop or two-stop itineraries.
The main airport serving Bali, Indonesia, is I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, also known as Denpasar International Airport (DPS). In 2022, DPS served 12.5 million passenger movements, marking an increase of 231% compared to a year prior, when the airport welcomed 3.7 million passengers.
However, there is one problem: the US has no direct services to Bali, with no US or international airline flying to the Indonesian island directly. Thus, travelers looking to fly to the destination have to look at one-stop or two-stop itineraries. Here are some of the best ways to get to the island if you book a flight in February 2024.
(1) Low-cost trip around the world
Starting point: New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK)Flights on: Norse Atlantic Airways
easyJet
flydubai
Batik Air Malaysia
The first flight on this itinerary will be between New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Paris Charles De Gaulle International Airport (CDG). With the journey being based on flights with low-cost carriers, the challenge will be to find another no-frill airline to hop on at CDG since many low-cost carriers operate flights out of other airports in the city. An alternative flying between JFK and CDG could be JetBlue.

However, to continuously move east, easyJet serves the next perfect stop-over destination: Naples Airport (NAP). From thereon, flydubai will be the next airline, with the United Arab Emirates (UAE)-based airline flying to Dubai International Airport (DXB). While Emirates serves a direct flight between DXB and DPS, the airline is no low-cost carrier, so the next flight would be from DXB to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) with Batik Air Malaysia.
The last low-cost carrier on the itinerary will be AirAsia, which, together with AirAsia X, operates four flights, most of them daily, to DPS during February 2024. In total, the journey is 11,689 miles (18,811 kilometers) long, according to Great Circle Mapper.
(2) Oneworld mileage run
Starting point: Dallas Fort/Worth International Airport (DFW)Flights on: Qantas
Jetstar Airways
If you are a loyal oneworld alliance member, which includes such airlines as American Airlines, British Airways, Iberia, Qatar Airways, and Qantas, reaching Bali from Dallas Fort/Worth International Airport (DFW) is relatively easy and unlike the previous journey, only involves two stops. That is because Qantas directly flies between DFW and Sydney Airport (SYD).
There are a few options from SYD: continue the journey with Qantas, get a cheaper ticket on Jetstar Airways or Batik Air Malaysia, or fly with Virgin Australia. If you continue to collect miles on oneworld alliance loyalty cards, the option is to go with either Qantas or Jetstar. Great Circle Mapper showed the distance from DFW to SYD and DPS to be 11,448 mi (18,423 km).
(3) SkyTeam mileage run
Starting point: Seattle Tacoma International Airport (SEA)Flights on:Delta Air Lines
Korean Air
SkyTeam is another alliance with many airlines based in all reaches of the world. With the goal to reach DPS and earn as many miles as possible, one starting option is Seattle Tacoma International Airport (SEA), a hub for Delta Air Lines. From there, the realistic option is to go west and board a flight to Seoul Incheon International Airport (ICN), South Korea.
Two options exist to continue collecting miles on SkyTeam: Korean Air or Garuda Indonesia. Both airlines offer direct flights between ICN and DPS, with both carriers utilizing the Airbus A330-300. While it will be up to you, the distance separating the three airports is 8,478 mi (13,644 km).
(4) Star Alliance mileage run
Starting point: San Francisco International Airport (SFO)Flights on: United Airlines
Singapore Airlines
The last on the airline alliance list is Star Alliance, which is the home to such carriers as Air Canada, United Airlines, the Lufthansa Group, Turkish Airlines, Singapore Airlines, and others. There are two options: to either go east or west, with Singapore Airlines and Turkish Airlines offering direct flights to Bali from their Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) and Istanbul Airport (IST) hubs, respectively.
