LOMBOK police say at least 14 people are dead and scores injured after an earthquake hit the popular tourist spot near Bali.

Lombok quake: Death toll, injuries rise on Indonesian island

AFPNews Corp Australia NetworkJULY 30, 20184:55AM

A POWERFUL earthquake on the Indonesian tourist island of Lombok killed at least 14 people, injured more than 160 including 67 hospitalised with serious injuries.

The strong quake has damaged more than 1,000 houses.

The shallow 6.4-magnitude quake jolted the island in the early morning, sending people running outside in panic and triggering landslides on popular mountain hiking routes.

Scores of aftershocks sparked fear among survivors. More than 120 were recorded, the biggest with a magnitude of 5.7, Indonesia’s meteorology agency said.

Local officials have declared a three day state emergency, according to multiple television reports.

An official from Indonesia’s Disaster Mitigation Agency says the number of casualties could increase as data was still being collected from other locations on the island.

“Hundreds of people were injured and thousands of homes were damaged in the earthquake in East Lombok. We are still collecting data,” Indonesian disaster mitigation agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said in a statement.

One Malaysian was killed and six injured, the Malaysian foreign ministry said. “All of them were at the foot of Mount Rinjani when the incident happened,” it said.

The constant aftershocks sparked terrified shouts among scores of people made homeless in the eastern village of Sembalun, an AFP reporter said.

Some 200 people from 35 families whose houses were damaged or destroyed had pitched tents there. The roof of a health clinic had collapsed and its walls had cracked.

“People are traumatised and too scared to return home for fear the aftershocks could destroy their homes completely,” the reporter said.

“Everytime there is an aftershock they cry out in fear and tremors can still be felt constantly.” Evacuees told AFP they badly needed blankets and instant food because there was no time to bring anything when they fled their homes.

Popular trekking trails on Mount Rinjani were closed because of landslides, according to the disaster agency.

One local trek organiser described how rocks rained down on two Spanish hikers and their guide as they were caught on a mountain trail.

“My trekking guide who was accompanying two tourists from Spain suffered from minor injuries during the jolt. They were hiking from Segara Anak Lake to Plawangan and rocks were falling on them during the quake,” said Karyadi, the owner of a guesthouse near Rinjani where the pair were staying.

The two Spaniards were also slightly hurt.

“Our guests were in shock because of the incident,” said Karyadi, who like many Indonesians goes by one name.

The epicentre of the earthquake struck 50 km (30 miles) northeast of Lombok’s main city Mataram, the United States Geological Survey said, far from the main tourist spots on the south and west of the island.

USGS said two of the aftershocks measured more than 5-magnitude. The jolt was felt some 100 km (60 miles) away in the bustling holiday island of Bali, although there were no immediate reports of damage there.

“The earthquake was very strong... and everybody in my house panicked, we all ran outside,” said Zulkifli, a resident of North Lombok near the epicentre.

“All my neighbours also ran outside and the electricity was suddenly cut off,” Zulkifli told AFP.

No tsunami alert was issued, according to Indonesia’s geophysics and meteorology agency.

“People in East Lombok and Mataram felt the strong quake for 10 seconds, residents were panicking and running outside of their homes,” Nugroho said earlier, adding people had run for open spaces such as football fields.

At the holiday island’s hotels, tourists raced outside as the quake struck. At the Katamaran Hotel & Resort in Senggigi beach, some 30 guests gathered in the lobby for around half an hour before venturing back to their rooms.

“They calmed down and returned to their rooms once we explained the earthquake did not trigger a tsunami. Everything is back to normal now,” receptionist Ni Nyoman Suwarningsih told AFP.

The quake also rocked the tiny Gili islands off northeast Lombok, which are popular with honeymooners, divers and partygoers.

“Fortunately there was no panic during the earthquake even though it was quite strong,” said Lilis Letisha, receptionist at the Ombak Paradise Hotel on Gili Air island.

Indonesia, an archipelago of thousands of islands, sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a seismic activity hotspot.

It is frequently hit by quakes, most of them harmless. However, the region remains acutely alert to tremors that might trigger tsunamis.

In 2004 a tsunami triggered by a magnitude 9.3 undersea earthquake off the coast of Sumatra in western Indonesia killed 220,000 people in countries around the Indian Ocean, including 168,000 in Indonesia.

Balinese News and views editor's comments:

At least 10 dead and many more missing after this morning's devastating 6.4 earthquake that hit off of northern Lombok. Bali's island neighbor to the east.

We are still's feeling aftershocks all the way over here approximately 80 km away.

Our hearts us and prayers go out to all those who suffered as a result of this natural s catastrophe.

All can say is thank God it took place in a very sparsely occupied area.

If it would have hit in a major city there could be hundreds or perhaps thousands of people dead.

Pray for the survivors

Ten people have been killed when a magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck the island of Lombok in Indonesia, a popular tourist destination, authorities have said.

The quake struck at 6.47am local time, and its epicentre was located 50km north-east of the city of Mataram on the island of Lombok, which has a population of 319,000.

Tourists near Senggigi, gateway to the popular Gili Islands resorts, reported strong shocks.

“We jumped out of our beds to avoid anything falling on our heads,” said Jean-Paul Volckaert who was woken by the quake in the Puncak hotel.

“We were very surprised as the water in the pools was swaying like a wild sea. There were waves in the pools but only for 20 to 30 seconds,” he said, adding that there was no damage to the hotel.

Many buildings were damaged, Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency said.

Indonesia’s geophysics and meteorology agency said at least 11 aftershocks were recorded after the earthquake.

The epicentre was 130km north-east of the island’s main city of Mataram and was very shallow, which would have amplified its effect.

“So far we have not received any report on damages,” agency spokesman Hary Tirto Djatmiko said in a statement. No tsunami alert was issued, he added.

People living near the epicentre felt a strong jolt.

“The earthquake was very strong ... and everybody in my house panicked, we all ran outside,” said Zulkifli, a resident of North Lombok, close to the epicentre.

“All my neighbours also ran outside and the electricity was suddenly cut off,” he said.

A 6.4 magnitude is strong enough to cause injuries and damage to buildings, but largely depends on how densely populated the affected area is.

In February, an earthquake of that strength hit Taiwan, killing 17 people and injuring hundreds more.

In 2016, 1.248 million Australians visited Indonesia. Bali was the main destination, but Lombok has become increasingly popular.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has been contacted about whether there are any reports of of Australian casualties

JAKARTA: At least three people were killed after a shallow 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck the Indonesian island of Lombok on Sunday, officials said.

The powerful quake, whose epicentre was at a depth of seven kilometres, hit at 6.47am local time (2247 GMT Saturday), the United States Geological Survey said.

Lombok in southeastern Indonesia is a popular tourist destination, and lies around 100km east of the resort island of Bali.

The quake struck 50km northeast of Lombok's main city Mataram, the USGS said, far from the main tourist spots on the south and west of the island.

"One person died in East Lombok and two died in North Lombok," Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman for Indonesia's disaster mitigation agency, said in a statement.

No details were provided on how the victims died.

At least two dozen others were injured in the earthquake, and one house was badly damaged in North Lombok.

Island authorities have temporarily closed the hiking trails on Mount Rinjani amid fears of landslides after the quake, Nugroho said.

No tsunami alert was issued, said Hary Tirto Djatmiko, spokesman for Indonesia's geophysics and meteorology agency, but more than 40 aftershocks were recorded.

People living near the epicentre said they felt a strong jolt.

"The earthquake was very strong... and everybody in my house panicked, we all ran outside," said Zulkifli, a resident of North Lombok, close to the epicentre.

"All my neighbours also ran outside and the electricity was suddenly cut off," he told AFP.

Gov't Confident 17 Million Foreign Tourists Will Visit Indonesia in 2018

Jakarta. The Ministry of Tourism is optimistic about its chances of meeting the target of 17 million foreign visits in 2018, expecting a surge in August, as Indonesia will host high-profile international events such 2018 Asian Games and the annual meetings of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund.

According to Central Statistics Agency (BPS) data, 6.2 million foreign visitors came to Indonesia between January and May, up 12 percent from the same period last year.

"We may very well receive twice the number of international visitors in second half. For this reason, we remain optimistic about our chances to reach this year's target of 17 million foreign visitors," the ministry's head of investment, Henky Manurung, said in Jakarta on Wednesday (25/07).

Henky sadi January-May has always been low season for the tourism sector, compared with the summer and year-end holiday season.

As Indonesia will be hosting Asia's most important sporting event, the 2018 Asian Games, many foreigners are expected to cone.

"It is incredibly influential, with many foreign citizens, and will be this year's biggest event," Hengky said.

The ministry is working together with agencies in the industry, both domestic and international, to design tour packages related to the Games.

"The Asian Games will increase the state's foreign exchange through tourism. If 170,000 people enter Indonesia spending $1,200 each, we would be getting roughly $230 million," Tourism Minister Arief Yahya said.

The World Bank and IMF annual meeting, which will be held in Bali on October, is going to be attended by thousands of people representing of foreign delegations.

Several domestic airlines have opened new routes to cater to foreign visitors. Citilink, the budget airline subsidiary of national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia, for example, will be operating direct flights between Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Banyuwangi International Airport in East Java.

Lion Air will fly from Sam Ratulangi International Airport in Manado, North Sulawesi, to Tianjin Binhai International Airport in China's Dongli.

Sriwijaya Air also reopened its China-Manado route.

"We hope that opening this new route will increase the number of international visits to North Sulawesi," said Sam Ratulangi Airport general manager Minggus ET Gandeguai.

How do foreigners view Indonesia?

Alfred Yip
Alfred Yip, Living my life to question it
As a guy from Hong Kong, I feel that there are a lot of misconceptions about Indonesia.
Sadly, a lot of people think that Indonesia is just Indomie.
Or a country with domestic helpers.
But Indonesia is certainly more than that.

This is the capital of the country, Jakarta.
This is Bali, where most foreign people would think of when they first think of Indonesia.
This is Surabaya, a city which people tend to forget when mentioning the country.
The rainforests there are beautiful too.
While Indonesia is a developing country, she also preserves mother nature quite well and never forget what it gives her.

Moreover, how can we forget this man?
Joko Widodo, the current Indonesian president.
Good movies.
And also the tasty Indonesian food?

I know that I'm merely scratching the surface of Indonesia, but through writing this answer, I would like to express that, don’t judge a country just using your perceptions and knowledge towards it.
You’ll learn about a place only by visiting the place. Although I have yet a chance to visit the wonderful nation, I hope I’ll get it one day.
Hope this answers your question. Cheers.

Large 6.4 Earthquake strikes on Lombok approximately 80 KM from Bali

We were all still in bed on a lazy Sunday morning on July 29 in Bali when at approximately 6:47 a huge earthquake of 6.4 magnitude struck.

It was strong enough to wake up my son which is a miracle.

The earthquake struck approximately 80 km or 40 miles from the eastern tip of Bali on the island of Lombok.

We have a drill in place to get my family and to evacuate to higher ground because we are right on the beach and there's always a minor chance of a tsunami. As always better safe than sorry.

One thing that bothers me about this earthquake is it was extremely strong and hit in a very poor rural area of northern Lombok. I won't be surprised if over the next 24 to 48 hours many reports of fully collapsed homes, injuries and possibly even deaths are associated with this quake. I pray that I'm wrong.

One thing I feel relatively right about is the fact that this was triggered by the unusual activity the last few days of extremely high swells associated with King tides and possibly even the longest Lunar ellipse coupled with  a once-in-a-lifetime alignment of the Earth, Sun, Moon and Mars yesterday morning.

One of my past blogs went viral with over 150,000 readers including magazines asking to reprint several years ago in a similar situation after we had large tides followed by a huge offshore earthquake on June 15, 2016 .

At the time I wrote that there’s probably an association between uncommonly high tides and earthquakes

At this point it appears there is no threat of a Tsunami.

I'm still waiting for reports from damage, injuries or even deaths on Lombok. Stay Tuned.

As a former yacht Capt. with my own yacht and charter service for five years in Bali when I first arrived here, I have years of experience and knowledge of Bali's waters and I want to warn you that they can be some of the most dangerous in the world, if you don't understand what's going on.

Every day the tide changes twice a day and vast amounts of water flow up and down the Bandung Strait between Bali and Lombok.

As the huge amounts of water get squeezed between Lombok and Bali  it increases the velocity making for some of the strongest currents in the world.

When you think of the quantity of water moving and then you add another 60 or 70 cm height it is easy to understand why when these tides are exceptionally high they can put pressure on the tectonic plates that surround Bali and Indonesia to trigger massive earthquakes.

I remember sailing off of Lombok with the engine on full power and not moving as the tide shifted and I knew that my hull speed was at least 8 knt. or perhaps even more with the engine and no current.

Posted June 11th 2016:
Last Thursday at 12:13 a 6.2 earthquake went off 300 km off of Bali and shook my office building violently.

I immediately called my maid and had my sons evacuated to higher ground from our beachfront residence in case there was a tsunami.

I learned after 10 years of being a captain on a yacht it is always "Better safe than sorry".

Turns out there was no tsunami, thank God.

Later that day it dawned on me and I shared this with my 12 yr old son that we had a a King tide or spring tide at approximately the same time that the earthquake went off. I wondered, are they related?

Many people experienced flooding on both coasts of Bali during that time.

At approximate the same time Bali experienced a  2.3 meter tide that hit all the coasts.

Using my several years of engineering education and 40 years of sailing I reasoned that large volumes of water moving from one part of the ocean to another part of the ocean exerts extra pressure on various areas of the Technonic plates that surround Bali and other places around the world.

I am now pretty convinced Spring tides or tides substantially higher than normal can cause earthquakes in areas that have active Technonic plates.
I googled it and sure enough in black-and-white my theory could be right based on a study conducted utilizing a Harvard University database.

High Tides Trigger Earthquakes

By Sarah Davidson | October 26, 2004 05:00am ET

Map of the major plates of Earth.Credit: USGS

The weight added by water at high tide can trigger movement close to land in earthquake faults that are already active, according to new global analysis.

"The importance of this work is to understand what stresses are needed to trigger a fault and this is one step of many that are needed to do that," Elizabeth Cochran, the lead author of the study told LiveScience. The study looked at data, taken from a Harvard database, of 2,000 earthquakes with magnitudes of 5.5 or higher in places where one piece of Earth's crust dives beneath another.

The surface of the Earth is not unbroken; rather it is divided into several large plates that move around on top of the planet. Wherever these plates come together there are faults. When a piece of ocean crust runs into a piece of continental crust, it is pushed beneath the lighter continent. Pressure builds. The release of pressure along a fault is what makes earthquakes.

The faults examined for the study, detailed recently in the online version of the journal Science, were near the surface and not far offshore, so that tides provide an increase and decrease in pressure due to the amount of water covering them.

"Large tides have a significant effect in triggering earthquakes," Cochran said. "The earthquakes would have happened anyway, but they can be pushed sooner or later by the stress fluctuations of the tides."

Because of gravity, the side of the Earth closest to the moon has a bulge of water. As our planet rotates the water on the opposite side, furthest from the gravity of the moon, essentially attempts to escape Earth's surface and creates a second high tide.

Another example of this force, called inertia, is how you feel when a car speeds around a corner. Although the car is going in a different direction, you are thrown against the door because your body is trying to continue in the same direction as before. On the remaining two sides, the forces of gravity and inertia even out and the water is neither trying to escape nor being pulled toward the moon, resulting in low tides.

A computer program developed by co-researcher Professor Sachiko Tanaka models how the Earth responds to the Moon and the addition of water weight, as well as a model of the ocean floor.

"The program is an important part and why only in the last few years have we been able to do this (research)," Cochran said. "This is the first study that has been able to take into account the amplitude of the tides."

Cochran said larger tides have a higher chance of triggering an earthquake on an active shallow fault near land, compared with regions where tides are less severe.

Hotels, villas flooded as Bali battered by 6m swells

Bali and world news and views editor's comments:

Those that did not heed my warning two days ago regarding huge tides and large swells are now regretting it as much damage has been done to a few of the villas, hotels, restaurants etc. that have challenged the ocean by building too close to it.

So  far no reports of deaths due to drowning in the extreme high tides or serious high waves.

Let's pray that continues.

Although swells may have gone down a little there is still an extremely high tide today around 10 o'clock.

Divers, swimmers and boaters should be aware that it is a dangerous time to be in or on Bali's oceans.

Better to wait until low tide six hours later.

As always better safe than sorry

Swell Time: Tides crazy high in Bali (VIDEOS)

NEWS, ENVIRONMENT, VIRAL, WEATHER
Bali & World News and Views Editors Warning.
I'm looking out in front of my beachfront residence at some of the largest swells I've seen in 5 years I've lived here.

These huge swells are coupled with extremely high tides the next 3 to 4 days around 10 to 11 a.m.

The tides will exceed two meters and upwards to 2.4 meters.

Anybody planning on going out into the Straits to go to another island or just for leisure should reconsider their plans.

Be extremely careful around Rocky Cliffs and Ledges as these are the type of waves that have killed many people in the past.
Divers, Surfers and swimmers should be extremely cautious of extraordinary strong currents that will be caused by these large swells and exceptionally high tides.
The extraordinary of the ocean right now could in fact trigger and offshore earthquake as well as it has in the past.
As always better safe than sorry.
If you must go in the ocean wait until midday too late afternoon when the swells and tides will be not as strong.

High tides in Bali on July 25, 2018.

Big waves have been rolling into Bali’s southern beaches with “monster” high tides, signaling the arrival of some serious swell.
Anyone else getting some serious flashbacks to the king tides in 2016? Or in more recent memory, how about the massive waves at Angel’s Billabong last week?
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued an alerton Wednesday warning of waves up to six meters in Bali’s southern waters.
And with the big waves and high tides have come plenty of videos and photos on the net, documenting the intensity.

Water traffic for boats making crossings via Sanur has been suspended for the time being, Sanur harbormaster Warsita told Tribun Bali on Wednesday.
In Padang Galak, Sanur, water reportedly ripped through food stalls, or warungs and even flooded the main road.
Water also made it to the street in Kuta:

While reports of warungs getting flooded have also come in from the Tabanan area.
Just look at this insanity at Tanah Lot:
