The latest travel data for Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport has been revealed.
The figures show that the number of arrivals continues to rise, and with the high seasons just around the corner, Bali hopes that 2024 will be the year that travel numbers surpass pre-pandemic levels.
Data for April 2024 reveals that Bali Airport served 1,940,828 passengers, consisting of 1,109,958 international passengers and 830,870 domestic passengers.
Speaking to reporters the General Manager of PT Angkasa Pura I I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport Handy Heryudhitiawan, said that the positive trends were influenced by public holidays and annual leave for millions of Indonesian tourists during the Idul Fitri Holiday which took place over the 8th-15th April 2024.
He said, the Eid period not only increased the number of passengers but also aircraft movements. “Aircraft movements increased by 11% compared to March 2024, reaching 11,444 movements.”
April was the busiest month in 2024 for Bali Airport, though when figures are released for May 2024, these numbers will surely surpass April.
With delegates and attendees for the World Water Forum estimated to be over 35,000 people, in addition to arrivals in May steadily increasingly ahead of the high seasons, Bali is on track to hit tourism targets in 2024.
According to Heryudhitiawan the the three busiest domestic routes during April 2024 were between Jakarta (CGK) with 383,227 passengers, Surabaya (SUB) with 134,692 passengers, and Makassar (UPG) with 45,950 passengers.
As for international routes, the busiest routes were based between Kuala Lumpur (KUL) with 139,913 passengers, Perth (PER) with 80,076 passengers, and Melbourne (MEL) with 77,461 passengers.
Heryudhitiawan told reporters, “There was also an additional route on April 26, 2024, by the Super Air Jet airline, namely the Samarinda-Denpasar (PP) route, flying regularly four times a week, which also helped increase traffic in April 2024.”
During the first four months of 2024 the number of trailers passing through Bali Airport reached 7,123,166 passengers, that saw 4,131,806 international passengers and 2,991,666 domestic passengers travel through the terminals.
Bali is soaring in popularity with European tourists right now, and tourism leaders are calling on both the government and airlines to support this travel trend by offering more direct flights from Europe to Bali.
Speaking to reporters earlier this week the Bali Sales and Marketing Community (BASACOMM), Gufron, said “Bali continues to move, even for the Australian market. Apart from Australia, tourists from Europe also have the potential to visit Bali. Like Germany, tourist visits from that country will increase by 14.23 percent in 2024.”
He continued “In fact, the current challenge is the airline flight. Airline prices are quite high, especially in Europe. Therefore, there must be a policy from the government.”
In statements issues earlier this week the Indonesian Minister for Tourism and Creative Economies, Sandiaga Uno, doubled down on his commitments to ensure that the Bali tourism ecosystem was strong and supportive of both local people, local businesses and tourists themselves.
Minister Uno said “we all ensure that the reputation and image of Bali as the spearhead of our tourism is firmly established as the world’s first choice. The resolution is how call parties can collaborate well so that Bali and Indonesian tourism become quality and sustainable world tourism.”
His comments come as all eyes are on Bali as the World Water Forum gets underway and as police continue to investigate a huge drugs bust involving foreigners in the booming tourism resort of Canggu.
Minister Uno concluded “there are several steps we can take at macro and micro levels to send a clear message to the world that we do not tolerate any criminal activity in this world leading tourism destination.”
