I first visited Bali 15 years ago, and while it's changed a lot since then thanks to an influx of development, the Island of the Gods will always hold a certain kind of magic.
Tiny but mighty Bali has a variety of stunning landscapes, all accessible within a few hours' drive from wherever on the island you may be. With rich culture, an amazing food scene, affordable massages, epic beach clubs and the friendliest locals, Bali is a global tourist favourite.
After living on this beautiful island for two years, it feels like my second home. And I'm not the only one with a connection – over a million Aussies travel to Bali every year.
Still haven't visited or unsure as to why you should? Here are a few reasons...

You can fly direct
Access is easy from Australia. Bali's roughly a six-hour flight from east coast hubs and there are frequent flight sales.
Carriers flying direct include Jetstar, Virgin, Qantas, Garuda Indonesia and Batik Air.
It's fantastic for families
Bali is a fabulous destination for kids. You'll often find restaurant/hotel staff wanting to hold or play with your mini people, leaving you to eat a hot meal with two free hands (bliss).
Waterfront resorts with kids' clubs and babysitting services are the go, like the Four Seasons at Jimbaran Bay, Sofitel Bali, Melia Bali and the Hard Rock Hotel (which has its own waterpark). But it's Bali, so villas are a fun option, too – Villa Finder has a great family-friendly selection.
Cafes and shopping are even kid-friendly. Canggu's Milk and Madu, Made's Warung and Parklife have dedicated playgrounds, while shopping at Tamora Gallery includes a playground and skate ramp.
Finns Recreation Club has thought of it all, housing Splash Water Park, Bounce Trampoline Centre, Strike Ten Pin Bowling and Cubby House Kids Club. Meanwhile in Kuta, spend a day at Asia's #1 water park, Waterbom Bali.
With all this fun, an extra pair of hands is helpful, and Balinese nannies are affordable and fantastic. Try a trusted agency like Aussie-run Bali's Best Babysitting.

Snorkelling and diving is best on the east coast around Amed and Tulamben with coral gardens and shipwrecks.
But it's Bali's beach club culture that cannot be beat. Lay back in your lounger while listening to live DJs and ordering delicious food and drinks until the sun sets at iconic venues like Sundays Beach Club, El Kabron, Potato Head Beach Club, La
Dry land is fun, too
Heading north isn't on everyone's Bali holiday itinerary, but it should be.
Hike Mount Batur at sunrise, meander through UNESCO world heritage Jatiluwih Rice Terraces, and see impressive waterfalls like GitGit and Sekumpul. Run through Marigold fields in Temukus, stay at coffee plantations like Batukaru and visit holy temples like Ulun Danu Beratan and Besakih.
Spike your heart rate with popular Padel or try whitewater rafting and ATVing near Ubud. For animal adventures, find cheeky monkeys in Ubud's Sacred Monkey Forest, horse and pony rides at Bali Equestrian Centre, and over 100 animal species at Bali Safari and Marine Park.
But you can't come to Bali without some serious spa time. Massages, mani pedis, hair cream baths, facials, flower baths – they're all a must. Try Bodyworks, Karsa, AMO and Ours.
The food is phenomenal
One of my favourite things about Bali is the incredible food. Roadside stands brim with colourful tropical fruits, including exotics like mangosteen and jackfruit, and local warungs serve up tasty Indonesian dishes like Nasi Campur (rice with assorted sides), Babi guling (suckling pig) and sate lilit (satay sticks of minced meat).
It may be the Aussie influence, but coffee is world-class with options like Revolver, BGS, Suka Espresso and Flowerboy. Vegans are similarly spoiled, with pioneering restaurants and cafes like Tanaman, Zest, Moksa, Sayuri Healing Food and Pels.
Most eateries in tourist hubs impress with cool design, high-calibre fare and buzzy atmosphere, regardless of price point. Times Beach Warung, Numero Quattro, Skool Kitchen, Yuki, Mason, Shelter, Mosto, Bar Vera and Sensorium are some
Surrounding islands are tropical paradise
A little further afield are Lombok and the Gilis. Lombok is known for great surf breaks, and its surrounding islands Gili Trawangan, Air and Meno are soft-sanded tropical escapes, each with their own distinct personality.
Bali's rich culture is truly special
What makes Bali so special is its kind and easygoing locals, where a big Balinese smile can instantly dissolve any worry.
Balinese Hinduism is the main religion on the island, and its impact is palpable. You'll notice canang sari – offerings of gratitude to the Gods – everywhere on the island. The air is fragrant with incense from rituals. Streets are filled with locals in ceremonial garb going to or from temple. Life is beautiful.
Learning more about these practices will deepen your appreciation and respect for this island and its people. I recommend staying in a guest house to connect with Balinese families or booking locally-operated cultural tours.
