I never thought in my life I would be in favor of more policing.
But after driving in Bali for over 25 years and the last three years during that pandemic driving myself I have become thoroughly frustrated with the total Ignorant drivers who are on the roads of Bali these days and it's not just locals.
There's a lot of people from foreign countries, especially one that's at war right now that seemed to think that they own the road. They have no idea about local road ethics and driving conditions.
Especially. In the West Coast communities that attracts the drinking, sex and rock'n'roll young people. Who? More recently, have been driving around without helmets with cans of beers in their hand just waiting for an accident to happen.
When I arrive at my office almost daily I tell my staff, "Well, I got some more good karma today because I saved another two or three lives by not killing them when they pulled in front of me.
Just last week. I was driving down the bypass in the through lane at about 10 KMH and then one motorcycle from the far left decided to turn at the last moment, they wanted to go right and smashed into my wife's brand new expensive car and then took off.
I highly recommend that tourists who come here to relax do not drive themselves, especially on motorcycles. I won't even let my own teenage sons drive motorcycles in Bali. It's just too dangerous.
I highly recommend you hire. Bojacks or ubers? Who are experienced drivers and will cost you next to nothing.
And as I tell all guests when they ask about driving, I say you must understand the rules of the road.
The unwritten rules of the road are that there are no rules that anybody follows.
The only rules they follow are they know that. Cars have right of way over motorcycles, Trucks have right away over cars and, buses have right away over everybody. Not legally, but that's the thinking.
So the government's installation of cameras on major thoroughfares is a godsend and a very smart move on the government's part.
Soon those who drive motorcycles without helmets with beers in one hand and a cell phone in the other hand will soon find that it costs them money to do so. And that will definitely improve the driving conditions in Bali.

Gone are the days where one can get away with traffic violations when there are no police officers in sight – at least in Badung and Denpasar, for now.
Bali Police have announced that it is launching a new digital traffic law enforcement system.
Praise be to technology, all tickets and fines for traffic violations will be issued via the E-TLE (Electronic Traffic Law Enforcement) system. Nationally, the Indonesian police announced the digital-only policy on Oct. 24.
Bali Police spokesman Stefanus Satake Bayu Setianto said earlier this week that eight E-TLE cameras have been installed in Denpasar and Badung, noting the following spots:Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai-Jalan Pulau Serangan
Simpang Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai-Jalan Kampus Unud.
Base Ops Lanud Ngurah Rai
Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai (before the popular gift shop Krisna)
Kawasan Airport Ngurah Rai-Jalan Raya Tuban
Kuta (SIMP Tuban)
Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai, Benoa, Kuta Selatan (west of the Pertamina 54.803.27 gas station)
Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai, Benoa, Kutsel (east of the Pertamina 54.803.27 gas station).
Before those locations, the new system was already introduced on Jalan Teuku Umar-Jalan Imam Bonjol Simpang Buagan for two months, Stefanus added.
In addition to those static cameras, patrolling police officers can also snap pictures of traffic violators using their smartphones. Violators will receive a digital notification for their warning or fine.
Stefanus said that traffic tickets will be sent to the addresses of the violators.
“Most violations include failing to wear a seatbelt, texting while driving, and smoking cigarettes while driving,” he said.
Separately, Badung Police Chief Leo Dedy Defrestes confirmed today that his officers will begin patrolling with their smartphones in areas not covered by E-TLE cameras.
Leo said that traffic violators will not be subject to fines during an unspecified grace period as the E-TLE system is introduced to people on the island. The exception would be on n Jalan Teuku Umar-Jalan Imam Bonjol Simpang Buagan (as the rule already introduced two months ago).
“We will warn motorists who violate [law]. So not all of them will be fined,” Leo said.
