Dr. Anthony Fauci predicted that the latest wave of the coronavirus pandemic may hit its peak in the U.S. by the end of January.

“It’s tough to say,” said Fauci, President Joe Biden’s top medical advisor, when asked on CNBC’s “Closing Bell” when the surge in infections fueled by omicron variant will start to recede.
“I would imagine, given the size of our country and the diversity of vaccination versus not vaccination, that it likely will be more than a couple of weeks, probably by the end of January, I would think,” Fauci said.

Dr. Anthony Fauci on Wednesday predicted that the latest wave of the coronavirus pandemic may hit its peak in the U.S. by the end of January.

“It’s tough to say,” said Fauci, President Joe Biden’s top medical advisor, when asked on CNBC’s “Closing Bell” at what point the current surge in infections, fueled by the omicron variant, will start to recede.

“It certainly peaked pretty quickly in South Africa,” where the highly transmissible new variant was identified last month, Fauci said. “It went up almost vertically and turned around very quickly.”

“I would imagine, given the size of our country and the diversity of vaccination versus not vaccination, that it likely will be more than a couple of weeks, probably by the end of January, I would think,” Fauci said.

Fauci also said it is technically possible that omicron could hasten the end of the pandemic, if it proves true that that variant, with its high degree of transmissibility, replaces other strains of the virus that cause more severe infections.

“I would hope that’s the case,” Fauci said when asked about that possibility, but “there’s no guarantee that that would happen.”

But “if you have a very transmissible virus that replaces another virus, and [the replacement virus] has less of a degree of severity, that would be a positive outcome,” he said.

“But you can never guarantee,” he stressed. “This virus has fooled us before. Remember we thought with the vaccines everything was going to be fine, and along came delta, which threw a monkey wrench into everything.”

Then came omicron, Fauci noted, which has fueled a massive spike in cases around the world — including in the U.S., where a record-high number of Covid infections have been reported this week.

Still, experts have been “pleased to see” that recent data from numerous countries show omicron infections are less severe than those from delta, Fauci said.

“What you say is possible, that that would happen, but there’s no guarantee that that would mean the end of a serious outbreak,” Fauci said.

“I hope that’s what’s being foreshown now, right? That we’re going to be seeing that,” he added. “Hope so, but can’t guarantee it.”

Worlds Best Hospitals and Universities build facilities in Bali

It's nice to see refreshing positive news the last few days regarding Bali's future among all the negative news regarding Omicron around the world.

Yesterday the President of Indonesia participated in the ground-breaking of a major hospital in Bali designated to medical tourism which is co-hosted by the famous American Mayo Clinic.

Today it was announced that the world famous Massachusetts Institute of Technology is going to open a campus very close to our PT. Bali Luxury Villas in Sanur. 

M.I.T. Universty

 M.I.T. is a university that I personally know well as I was considering studying at it 50 years when at that time it was recognized as arguably the best engineering university in the world.

 In addition, one of China's top universities the Tsinghua University is the number one university in China ranked #26 in Best Global Universities in the world is also opening a campus here.

 So, the bottom line is that in the extremely near future some of the best engineering minds in the world will be able to study in Bali along with any Indonesians who wished to take that route.

Close Proximity to Sanur:

They are building the campuses for these two prestigous universities a few minutes from our award winning PT. Bali Luxury Villas in Sanur.  

This Island is known to locals as Turtle Island.

This area was cleared decades ago by the former presidents son Tommy Suharto and left vacant for several decades.

I was frankly surprised to see that they have been planting trees there lately.

I've always said that Seranang Island could be one of the most luxurious areas of Bali in the future.

It looks like that prediction is coming true.

It's important to note that all the areas around Seranang are busy commercial or industrial areas with very few accommodations.

Those that are there are not first-class or luxurious. 

It's not until you drive to Sanur that you begin to find some first-class accommodations such as our Tripadvisor Hall of Fame award winning PT. Bali Luxury Villas.

 

I have visions of a future where the students that attend these universities will probably be of the high class families in places such as United States, Australia Singapore etc.

 The fact that the most successful University in China is building there will attrack the extremely rich Chinese Students.

Anybody who is familiar with College cities around the world know that when there is a major college built property values increase significantly around the area.

I have visions of wealthy families from around the world coming here to visit their children in one of the two colleges and then deciding to buy here once they realize how beautiful Sanur and Serangan islands are.

So get ready for a huge surge of new demand.

Silicon Valley of Indonesia:

I agree with the Gov.'s vision of making this the Silicon Valley of Asia.

One of the great things about this whole concept is it is not Tourist related.

Bali can be weaned off relying 85% on tourism which caused a dramatic downturn in tourists and real estate the last two years.

What is exciting for us is that 20 years ago we decided to build three Bali Luxury Villas developments with 55 luxururious villas in Sanur.

There are plenty of accommodations on the other side of the By - Pass but the Oceanside is where everybody wants to be. 

Nobody wants to risk their life crossing the four lane By- Pass to go to the ocean.

When you look at this map you can see that our southernmost complex Jade Villas, is only 16 minutes away and Emerald Villas is another three minutes. Our Golden Villas is another two minutes.

 I fully expect that they will put a Ferry straight from Serangan into Sanur which will probably only take five minutes.

 Demand from International Hospital:

In addition to the new demand from these two major universities there will be Medical interns and Hospital staff  at the brand-new Bali International Hospital to be built in Sanur that will require accommodations.

This supports my long time prediction that Sanur, which is already a major designation  for baby boomers who are retiring, will also be a destination for professional medical doctors and staff plus engineers from around the world.

 

When you look at the fact that Sanur has very limited availability for rentals and sales of villas on the ocean side of the bypass there no question in my mind the prices of rentals and sales are going to rise significantly in the very near future in Sanur.

Smart investors will buy now.

UID Campus Starts Construction at BTID Serangan Bali, Believed to be Indonesia's Silicon Valley

The campus began to be built in the Bali Turtle Island Development (BTID) area in Serangan Village, City Denpasar . 

This was conveyed by a member of the Regional Representative Council Made Mangku Pastika in Denpasar, Tuesday (29/12/2021). 

Pastika believes that the technology-based education area will become Indonesia's silicon valley.

Pastika conveyed this when visiting the location of the prestigious campus construction project which was the result of a collaboration between the two world-renowned universities.

"Tsinghua University as the number one university in China cooperates with MIT, the number one university in America and the world, to build an educational institution here," he said.

In addition, according to him, this area is also the center of the most prestigious technology education in the world.

 According to Pastika, the construction of the campus, which will later be called Efforts for Peaceful Indonesia (UID), was planned when he was still the Governor of Bali.

"The Chancellor of Tsinghua University has also come to meet me when I was governor," he said.

However, the construction had stalled due to licensing constraints, so the work only started in 2021.

With the construction of this prestigious international technology campus, Pastika assessed that its role is very important for the world of education to improve the quality of Balinese human resources, Indonesian people and even world people.

The former Bali Police Chief added that the concept of an educational area that was built was also based on the Tri Hita Karana philosophy, namely the balance between humans and God, humans and others and humans and the environment.

40% of Indian Tourist Visits Bali for Weddings and honeymoons:

India has always been focussed market for Indonesia since 2016. 

Before the pandemic, visitors from India continued to increase every year. 

In 2019, total visitors from India reached 657.300 and then reached 104.765 visitors in the first three months of 2020 before Covid-19 outbreaks. 

Sigit Witjaksono, Director of Tourism Marketing for Asia Pacific, Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy of the Republic of Indonesia, talks on the preparation to woo international visitors, new normal and importance and strategy for India market.

With uncertainty still prevailing, how do you see 2022 for outbound travel? 

Do you foresee a significant demand from India market? Any new trend in terms of international travel?

Indonesia, especially Bali, has opened international flights starting October 14, 2021 for 19 countries including India. 

Until now, we continue to make preparations to welcome international tourists, of course, by keeping an eye on the situation where a new variant of Omicron is currently appearing.

In response to the opening of international flights, we have collaborated with Indonesian representatives abroad to carry out an awareness campaign since October 2021 to inform them that the border is open for Indian tourists. In addition, we have also contacted our partners in India to start cooperation. 

We received information that Indian tourists are very eager to be able to travel to Indonesia soon. 

Therefore, through our partners, we want to ensure that the arrival of Indian tourists is very much awaited. In that regard, we are also working on connectivity of direct and indirect flights from India to Indonesia destinations.  

The new trend in terms of international travel, the important thing is that we have to make tourists feel comfortable and safe. The new normal condition with the implementation of CHSE (cleanliness, health, safety & environmental sustainability) protocol is a must/ mandatory for future trip activities. 

We would like to ensure the safety and health of the people travelling as our utmost objectives. 

In this regard, we have done and implemented our efforts and strategy with adaptation, innovation and collaboration to achieve that goal.

Post Pandemic, do you foresee India still featuring amongst your top priority markets?

With this good trend, it is certain that Indian tourists will be our attention. Moreover, they really like various destinations in Indonesia, especially Bali, which is indeed their main destination if they go to Indonesia. 

The Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy/Head of the Tourism and Creative Economy Agency, Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno had also held a meeting with the Indian Ambassador to Indonesia, Manoj Kumar Bharti. 

During the meeting, the two of them discussed various future program plans, especially opportunities to increase cooperation in the tourism sector and the post-pandemic creative economy. 

The plan to reopen Bali with direct flights from India was also discussed. 

This confirms that India is and will still be a very important market for Indonesia.

How are you tweaking your marketing strategy for 2022?

In the opening of the international border, Bali became a pilot project for bringing international visitors to Indonesia and was then be followed up with Batam and Bintan. Safe routes, safe zones, transportation, referral hospitals, mitigation provisions already prepared. 

We have coordinated everything from time to time together with the relevant Ministries/Institutions (Ministry of Health, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Immigration, National Covid-19 Task Force, etc.), provincial/district governments and related industries. 

We need to emphasize that since last year 2020, the government & people of the Republic of Indonesia in many regions/capital cities of all the provinces have been making some efforts to ensure the readiness of destinations to welcome visitors with the implementation of CHSE. 

The ongoing efforts in various regions in Indonesia ensure that hotels, restaurants, tourist attractions, souvenir shops, etc. can create a sense of security and comfort so that Indian tourists will feel “worry-free”.

Any new updates in terms of attractions or tourism infrastructure upgrade in the destination?

Since the last year 2020, the government & people of the Republic of Indonesia in many regions/capital cities of all the provinces have been making some efforts to ensure the readiness of destinations to welcome visitors with the implementation of CHSE (cleanliness, health, safety & environmental sustainability).

The purpose of CHSE is to make sure end-to-end travel start from the arrival at the airport, hotel, accommodation, tourist attraction, and so on and up to returning back to the airport. We would like to show the world that Indonesia is ready to welcome back international tourists and keep improving the destination experiences.

Until November 2021, as many as 11,986 tourism business have been certified. This effort will also be continued this coming second semester of 2021 in many other cities all around the country, covering hotels, restaurants, tourist attractions, souvenir shops, etc. so that it would, in turn, build and strengthen confidence for the tourists to visit Indonesia when the condition is possible later on.

Which segments of tourism will be your focus once tourism restarts? Which are the new destinations that you will be promoting?

Bali, Bintan, and Batam will be a pilot project of preparing to bring international visitors to Indonesia. We will continue to promote Bali because Bali remains the main destination for Indian visitors. As many as 40% of Indian visitors come to Bali for weddings and honeymoons, this is what we will continue to work on as well as other potential segments for adventure, leisure and so on.

By when do you foresee MICE and corporate travel market to bounce back?

For the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Exhibitions) Segment, the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy has made a guidebook/guideline on health protocols (CHSE) for the implementation of MICE activities. The guidebook received appreciation at the international event Bali Democracy Forum in December 2020. When travel resumes, hopefully, international MICE events and activities in Indonesia can be carried out and run safely according to health protocols. 

Indonesia's chairmanship/presidency in the G20 has started from December 1, 2021, until November 2022, then continues with the Chair of Indonesia in ASEAN in 2023. This is an opportunity for Indonesia to show the readiness of Bali and various other destinations, especially the 5 Super Priority Destinations, which will become the venue for the various series of G20 and ASEAN meetings.

It discusses the reality of the most recent COVID virus Omicron and its implications for the New Year.

More importantly it reveals a bright bit of news that came out yesterday when the President of  Indonesia completed groundbreaking for the brand - new Bali International Hospital on Sanur Beach.

Those of you who live in Bali, especially those of you who live in Sanur may find the information very positive and inspiring during these dire times.

Year End Update.

All of us here in Bali hope that you and your family had a wonderful Christmas.

For almost two years now during this pandemic we've adopted a saying “seeing is believing.”

We've had several major false starts on international tourist arrivals. 

Not anybody's fault other than a virus that seems to want to redevelop it’s self anytime it is slowed down.

Omicron -The Grinch that Stole Christmas

Our hopes a month ago that Bali would be booming with tourists by Christmas after they opened the international airport were crashed with the emergence of the Omicron virus. 

 

Just like the terrifying children's story where an evil entity the Grinch comes and steals Christmas away from the villagers Omicron came along at the last minute to kill hopes of a great Christmas for Bali and the world.

It spreads faster than the previous variants but is not as deadly.

Watching country after country begin to lock down on the news the last few days and then talking to my relatives back in Canada made me  pretty depressed indeed as they all tell me that things are getting bad again.

 Fortunately, up until this date there's been no confirmed cases of Omicron in Bali but it's maybe just a matter of time. 

Things are back to normal here. Even the movie theatres and restaurants.

But as I tell my family, friends, and staff we must not let our guard down.

My opinion based on watching this virus closely for two years and researching the last major pandemic in 1918 plus using common sense is that modern vaccines developed in one year instead of five and now a new pill that may prevent most people from going to the hospital provides a glimmer of hope for the near term.

Bali to Become Major Medical Tourism Center:

This morning I was driving down the Bypass to my office after tennis at the brand-new Liga tennis club in Sanur. 

Liga is a big plus for Sanur providing not only five indoor and two outdoor tennis courts but also a swimming pool and modern first-class gym.

All the traffic lights were turned off and police were directing traffic rapidly.

There were blue flashing lights behind me. 

I thought obviously it was a dignitary. 

I didn't know it was the President of Indonesia, Jokowi

A few hours later after reviewing news updates I noticed that he was here to do a ground-breaking at the brand-new Bali International Hospital.

 I've published blogs on this before but frankly I anticipated it would take some time to come to fruition. 

It now looks like they're serious.

The potential benefits of this new world-class international hospital featuring one of the top clinics in the world the famous Mayo Clinic from the United States will be immense for Bali and especially Sanur.

The Mayo Clinic is a non-profit American academic medical center focused on integrated health care, education, and research.

It employs over 4,500 physicians and scientists, along with another 58,400 administrative and allied health staff, across three major campuses:

They specialize in treating difficult cases through tertiary care and destination medicine.

The top-15 ranked Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine in addition to many of the highest regarded residency education programs in the United States.^[

New Demand, Higher Prices for Sanur Quality Accommodations:

Obviously, there's going to be hundreds of nurses, medical personnel and dozens and perhaps even hundreds of doctors from around the world who are going to need accommodations for both short-term and long-term.

Our fifty-five Pt. Bali Luxury Villas with 135 bedrooms is within walking distance. only approximately 2 km ( 1 Mile) on a magical beach walk away.

So, I expect the first renters and buyers will be engineers, contractors followed by medical staff and finally doctors.

Prediction Becomes Reality:

So a prediction I been making for 15 years that someday Sanur would be a centre for medical tourism and attract those seeking high-quality inexpensive medical care from around the world will come true.

There is no question in my mind that this new Bali International Hospital, which obviously has the full support of the national government and the Mayo Clinic, will attract some of the best doctors in the world.

 After all what Dr. would not want to bring their family to Bali and  live here for several years for a fraction of what it costs in their country, with clean air, low crime, and some of the best food and activities in the world.

This Too Shall Pass - Live with Covid

So, the bottom line is this too shall pass.

 I also believe that most of the world will begin to adopt the philosophy that Covid will be around forever, and we should just live with it like we do a common flu or cold.

I hope I'm right on all these issues and things returned to normal very quickly.
