4.9 quake 16 Oct 4:18 am (GMT +8) A magnitude 4.9 earthquake near Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia, was reported only 12 minutes ago by Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in Indonesia.
The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Saturday, October 16th, 2021, at 4:18 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.0. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.8.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Kintamani (pop. 87) located 17 km from the epicenter, Bedugul (pop. 20,000) 20 km away, Amlapura (pop. 31,900) 21 km away, Karangasem (pop. 31,900) 22 km away, Klungkung (pop. 27,800) 22 km away, and Ubud (pop. 28,400) 28 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Denpasar (pop. 834,900) located 43 km from the epicenter, and Singaraja (pop. 133,800) 47 km away.
