As protests continued in Hong Kong, China pledged to impose new national security laws on the city “without the slightest delay,” reported Lily Kuo at The Guardian.
The laws, which would target anti-government protests, have become a “pressing obligation,” according to China foreign minister Wang Yi. On Sunday, thousands in Hong Kong broke social distancing guidelines in protests opposing China’s attempts to take greater control over the autonomous city.
Protesters chanted “Revolution of our time. Liberate Hong Kong,” “Fight for freedom, Stand with Hong Kong,” and “Hong Kong independence, the only way out,” Reuters reported, as police fired tear gas, rubber bullets, and pepper spray.
“The decision targets a very narrow set of acts that seriously jeopardize national security,” Wang said, denying that the law would be used against media and critics of the government. “It has no impact on Hong Kong’s high degree of autonomy and the rights and freedoms of Hong Kong residents or the legitimate rights, interests of foreign investors in Hong Kong.”

They came in response to mass protests involving millions over several months in favor of Hong Kong’s autonomy in 2019.
White House national security adviser Robert O’Brien said this move could lead to US sanctions, according to the Guardian. He also said that the laws could make Hong Kong less attractive as a business hub in the region. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo similarly condemned the new laws as a “death knell” for the city’s autonomy last week.

"One country, two systems" was formulated in the early 1980s by Deng Xiaoping, 3rd Paramount leader of the People's Republic of China (PRC), during negotiations with the United Kingdom over Hong Kong.
He suggested that there would be only one China, but that these regions could retain their own economic and administrative systems, while the rest of Mainland China uses the socialism with Chinese characteristics system.
Under the principle, each of the two regions could continue to have its own governmental system, legal, economic and financial affairs, including trade relations with foreign countries, all of which are independent from those of the Mainland.

"One only need to look across the border at mainland China to get a glimpse of how "national security" -- broadly and vaguely defined -- can be used as a convenient pretext for the political prosecution of dissidents, activists, human rights lawyers and journalists.
Nobel Peace Prize laureate Liu Xiaobo, for example, was sentenced to 11 years in prison for "inciting subversion of state power." Prior to his arrest, Liu helped draft a manifesto calling for democracy and political reform in China.
So the bottom line is the "One country, two systems" may be coming to an end.
Along with that may come the end of large international companies & banks choosing Hong Kong as their head office.
It will definitely mean the end of many foreign expatriates choosing to live in Hong Kong, unless they are okay with living under socialized government.

A few years ago I coined the term that Hong Kong is the bitcoin of the real estate market because it keeps on going up even though it does make sense to buy anything there.
Achieving a positive cash flow on a rental there is near impossible anymore.
And now you have the possibility of abundant expatriates and even Hong Kong nationals leaving therefore diminishing the the demand and creating an inverted price curve for real estate.
This could very well be the start of an exponential downturn in real estate in Hong Kong.
If I was a expat living there as several of my friends are I would be concerned about living under socialized system an the safety of my family.
The freedoms I grew up with such as right of speech will be questionable under the new laws.
I would certainly be seeking greener pasture.
Bali the greenest pasture of all.
If I still wanted to live in Asia at about 70% less with cleaner air and a very open society with freedom of speech and a very healthy environment and one of the lowest coronavirus rates in the world I would seriously be considering moving to Bali.
Especially if I am approaching retirement age and am a baby boomer who wants to reduce my cost-of-living.
We are only 5 to 5 1/2 hours away from Hong Kong so we can still return to visit friends and relatives.
In fact when you move here you will find they will all want to come and visit you.
