Bali Officials Terminate Second Airport And Other Infrastructure Projects

Editor's Comments:

Very sad to read this news that the Indonesian government has decided to terminate which possibly means postpone the building of a second airport on Bali on the northern coast next to Lovina .

I personally know many people who purchased properties in the areas in anticipation of this airport being built.

in

During the pandemic I cruised up to the area where supposedly they were going to build the airport and frankly decided the location didn't make any sense.

I can only assume that one of the reasons the airport is not going through at this time is because Bali, which relies perhaps much is 85% on tourism has undergone a dramatic downturn in tax revenues the last 2 1/2 years.

Almost simultaneously yesterday the government announced that they were going to make an area of Sanur or which happens to be primarily owned by the government a special economic zone and focus on being a second source of revenue to Bali medical tourism.

This decision I am thoroughly behind because first and foremost it will improve the medical facilities and treatments available in Bali substantially for people like me and other senior adults.

Secondly it will bring a huge source of new income to Bali which will not be reliant on tourism. Therefore when things such as volcanoes,  economic downturns and pandemics happen It won't be as bad on Bali in the future.

Finally I am extremely happy that is happening in Sanur which happens to be where I based my business 23 years ago building 55 villas all which will benefit  from this new medical tourism area.

So the bottom line is the North Shore of Bali will continue to remain quiet and still attract those that want to get away from the hustle and bustle of Bali's South West Coast.

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has shelved plans for a second airport on Bali. The plan was slated to be built in the northern part of Bali, but like other infrastructure projects, this project has been abandoned.

The plan was for the North Bali Airport to be completed by 2024, but it has been removed from the National Strategic Project (PSN). Other infrastructure projects such as: Tiro Dam in Aceh and the Tanjung Api-Api Economic Center in South Sumatra have also been removed from the PSN.

Whilst this was supposed to be completed in President Widodo’s final year in office, the lack of progress was the main reason for scrapping the plan. Wahyu Utomo, the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs’ deputy of regional development and spatial planning, echoed these sentiments, “[the project] had been given a warning for extension, but there is no progress, so it was removed.”

The lack of progress was clearly evident as the land required for the North Bali Airport has still not been procured, ergo the 2024 operational launch deadline being nearly impossible to achieve.

Initiated by private airport construction company PT BIBU Panji Sakti, the airport would have been in Kubutambahan, Buleleng and uniquely been an offshore airport. China Construction First Group Corp. Ltd was set to handle the construction of the new airport.

While some believe it is essential for the island to have a second airport, it is widely thought that the COVID-19 pandemic has shifted the government’s focus and priority. While this isn’t the end for the new airport, it currently is not in the plans for the near future.

MALIBU MAGAZINE Julie Wuellner & her husband flew to Bali - lush jungles - towering rice terraces-wild monkeys and incredible food

The splash was louder than expected, and the impact harder than I would have guessed in that split second you have when you realize you’re about to fall—right before you plummet into the abyss of a 10-foot Balinese canal, filled with dirty water and trash.

When I opened my eyes, I was at the bottom of said canal with twelve complete strangers, a worried tour guide, and my incredulous husband peering over the edge.

“Never in all my years as a guide have I seen this happen,” I heard the guide nervously assure my husband. So how did I get into this situation? That is a question I ask myself even now, weeks later, sitting comfortably back home at my desk in Malibu. But in short, Kevin and I were halfway through our two week adventure in Bali, Indonesia on our way from the main island to Nusa Lembongan, a smaller and we were told wilder island, filled with white sand beaches named things like “Dream Beach”, incredible cliff outcroppings that spew water tens of feet into the air and and mangroves ready to explore via kayak or stand up paddleboard, when I took my tumble attempting to get my bag out of a van by the Sanur marina.

Swinging Over The Rice Terraces No visit to Tegalalang Rice Terraces is complete without stopping by one of the many ‘Bali Swings’ and swinging out high above the rice paddies below.

“Hey mate, I think those are your boat tickets floating away,” an Australian traveler so kindly pointed out before pouring vodka, straight out of a bottle he carried in his bag onto my bloody elbow. In the end, we never did make it to Nusa Lembongan, mostly out of my husband’s fear that my accident-prone self wouldn’t survive an even wilder island and my semi-urgent need to seek out a Balinese clinic to get my battle wounds properly disinfected.

Despite that one unfortunate incident, Bali is one of the most incredible places either of us have ever traveled to. During our time there, we climbed onto ginormous wooden swings that swung us high above picturesque rice terraces, we met wild monkeys in Ubud’s Monkey Forest (and then swiftly attempted to hide all of our possessions from said sneaky creatures), and we visited temples believed to be created by the Hindu goddess Indra herself. We met locals so excited to have visitors that they took the time out of their day to show us their fields and to drive up and down the same stretch of road so that we could get that one perfect photo. We watched more people (and belongings) being piled onto small scooters, affectionately known as ‘scoopies’ than should be physically possible and wind their way through the seemingly lawless Bali streets. We waded through rivers and hiked down canyons to explore Bali’s many breathtaking waterfalls. And we mingled with the locals at Ubud’s weekend farmer’s market, a place filled to the brim with exotic fruits and spices, hand-made baskets and flower-filled offerings to the Hindu gods and goddesses.
Rice Fields & Lush Jungles

Once you get out of the hustle and bustle of cities like Denpasar and Ubud the Balinese countryside is filled with lush jungles, and farmers working in the serene rice paddies or terraces.

Natural Beauty From visiting the monkeys of Ubud to walking through the immense Jatiluwih Rice Terraces and experiencing awe-inspiring waterfalls, Bali is filled with natural beauty at every corner.

Throughout our two-week stay, we spent most of the time in Ubud, known as the health-centric yoga capital of Bali, not because we are yoga fanatics, but because the city offers excellent shopping and restaurants and also happens to be centrally located. This made it the perfect base for us to get through Balinese traffic (which is possibly even worse than LA traffic) to see the many places we had on our Bali wishlist. Along with yoga, Ubud is also well-known for is it’s countless incredibly delicious eateries, and while yoga might not be our thing, good food is something we could definitely get behind. On every corner, you’ll find a restaurant or ‘warung’ with hundreds of five-star yelp reviews, making it almost impossible to go wrong when choosing a place to eat in Ubud.

Cultural Icon Tanah lot is a rock formation on the coast, home to the ancient Hindu pilgrimage temple Pura Tanah Lot.

Inspired by all the mouthwatering food we were eating, we decided to try a cooking class at B. Saya, a local hotel. While I wouldn’t say we came home being able to recreate that perfect Indonesian five-course meal (or even one of those five courses), we did have a blast cutting up spices and frying lemongrass chicken satay while hanging out with the other guests next to the hotel’s infinity pool.

Was our Bali trip perfect? No. But what trip is? All in all, we had an incredible time and would recommend the island to anyone looking for an Indonesian adventure -- just try to avoid any and all canals.

Bali’s Holy Water Temple Tirta Empul Temple offers visitors bathing in its waters one of the holiest experiences on the Island. The temple’s waters come from sacred springs said to be created by the goddess Indra.

People Watching The market is easily one of the most busy and chaotic spots in Ubud, but all the excitement makes for great people watching.

Ubud Morning Market Every Saturday morning the Ubud Market transforms into a farmer’s market filled with locals selling everything from fruits and veggies to flowers and ready-made food.

Bali Guide
Here you can find our list of the most noteworthy restaurants, attractions and hotels in Ubud and surrounding areas for an unforgettable Balinese experience.
Restaurants

Pulau Kelapa Warung
+62 361-971872
For some of the best, authentic Balinese cuisine in the Ubud area we couldn’t recommend Pulau Kelapa Warung more. The warung (eatery in Balinese) is only a short 10 minute drive from the heart of Ubud and seats patrons in peaceful, semi-traditional setting. Try the Nasi Campur with beef for a delicious and fun mix of Balinese food.

Milk & Madu
+62 812-3673-6733
Back in 2012 two friends from Byron Bay joined forces to bring some of the best (all-day) breakfast, lunch & dinner to Ubud. Milk & Madu serves everything from eggs benedict, healthy breakfast bowls and freshly roasted coffee to their famous lava stone pizzas in a beautiful, casual setting in central Ubud.

Clear Cafe
+62 878-6219-7585
Clear Cafe offers patrons one of the nicest restaurant atmospheres in Ubud. Upon entering you are asked to take off your shoes before being whisked away through a giant circular door and seated (on the ground) in front of a serene koi pond. The menu is filled with healthy, vegan options meant to clear your mind.

Warung Babi Guling Ibu Oka No. 3
+62 361-976345
One Ubud favorite not to miss is Warung Babi Guling Ibu Oka No. 3. The restaurant serves traditional Bali-style babi guling (whole roasted suckling pig stuffed with traditional spices). While it’s open until 6pm, but we recommend going before 3pm since they routinely sell out.

Places to see

Jatiluwih Rice Terraces
Grander than the famous Tegalalang rice terraces, Jatiluwih rice terraces seem to sprawl across the hills as far as the eye can see and allow visitors to walk right through the middle of them on a well-maintained paved path. Jatiluwih is also often emptier than Tegalalang, most likely due to its further distance from tourist hotspots.

Tegenungan Waterfall
Close to Ubud, Tegenungan Water is the perfect destination for nature-lovers looking for a bit of adventure. Visitors can choose to watch the majestic waterfall amidst the lush jungle from the cliffs above or hike down to the base for a front-row seat.

Tegalalang Rice Terraces
Perhaps one of the most famous settings in Bali, the Tegalalang rice terraces offer visitors iconic views of Bali’s rice paddies and their innovative irrigation system. Numerous cafes line the road with great views of the rice terraces. For the daring at heart, swing out high above the terraces on one of the many Bali swings.

Ulun Dano Lake Temple
More commonly referred to as the floating temple, Ulun Dano Beratan Temple is set on Lake Beratan, close to 4,000 feet above sea level, to the backdrop of stunning mountain vistas. If your heart is set on seeing the temple floating on the lake, ask prior to making the trip since this is dependent on water levels.

Ubud Street Market
If you’re staying in Ubud, its impossible to miss the Ubud Market, which acts as the city center. However, even if you’ve walked around the market during the week when vendors are selling souvenirs and clothing, it’s worth coming back on a Saturday morning for the local farmer’s market. If you go early, there are few tourists and it makes for great people watching.
Activities
Tirta Empul Temple One of the holiest experiences you can have in Bali is when visiting Tirta Empul Temple, a holy temple built over sacred springs said to have been created by the goddess Indra. The temple is believed to possess curative properties and allows visitors to bathe in its sacred water.

Ubud Monkey Forest
700 wild monkeys inhabit the Ubud Monkey Forest, and while the monkeys are free to come and go as they wish, they generally stay in the area for its lush habitat and daily feedings. While incredibly cute, the monkeys can be quite mischievous little creatures so watch your belongings when you go!

B. Saya Cooking Class
(310) 456-7600
The Ubud area is well-known for its exquisite cuisine and if you’d like to learn how to make some of the traditional balinese dishes at home, head over to B. Saya for one of their informative yet laid-back cooking classes set right next to their beautiful pool, overlooking the nearby rice paddies.

Hotels & Villas

Lift Trehouse
Perhaps the most unique stays listed on AirBnB in Ubud, Lift Treehouse allows guest to spend the night in you guessed it, a treehouse. The location is a little hard to find at first, and not accessible by car, but once you get there it’s well worth it.

Best things you can do in Ubud

At this time, we will present the best things you can do in Ubud. Ubud is a popular artists’ village in central Bali. The area is popular due to the surrounding rice terraces like Tegalalang, countless waterfalls, yoga retreats, or a hike up Mount Batur.

Everyone spends their time in Ubud differently. While some prefer to stay out of the city on a retreat, others go from restaurant to restaurant or explore nature.

Nestled in the verdant central foothills of Bali, amidst rice terraces and rainforest, ubud It is the cultural and spiritual center of the island. Modern Ubud is something of an international hotspot, with a dizzying array of outdoor activities, shopping, day spas, and restaurants serving international cuisine.

But its picturesque temples and traditions attracted expats and travelers long before the era of Eat, Pray, Love, and Ubud still takes pride in its Balinese heritage. A tour of the village will take you to the grand Ubud Palace, the impressive Saraswati Temple and the Ubud Monkey Forest Sanctuary, where you must store your belongings because the resident macaques are fearless.

These sights are not to be missed, but the real charm of Ubud is its people and traditional culture. Here you can experience authentic Balinese life: take a woodcarving or pottery class, learn about Balinese cuisine, chat with locals in the market, and be sure to catch a barong or keris dance performance, usually accompanied by gamelan music. and drums.

Located just an hour north of Denpasar and the international airport, Ubud is an ideal inland retreat and a perfect base for exploring the highlands.

Hindu holy sites such as the magnificent Tirta Empul Temple and Goa Gajah are famous day trips, as is the village of Petulu, known for its flocks of Kokokan birds.

The Ubud Monkey Forest, located on the outskirts of central Ubud, is home to more than 700 long-tailed macaques.

This nature reserve is perhaps the best known in Bali thanks to its community management, location and easy access.

Overseen by Padangtegal Village, Ubud Monkey Forest is a place of scientific research and a place of spiritual and cultural aspects, as there are sacred temples enshrined by the villagers.

Ubud Monkey Forest is also called the Sacred Monkey Forest of Padangtegal, and by its official name Mandala Wisata Wenara Wana.
Visit the waterfalls near Ubud

Theirs is the best thing people can do in Ubud. Some of the waterfalls near Ubud are known as the best waterfalls in Bali. If you find them on a hot day, they can be absolute heaven. Jump in the water, take some photos and have a great day with friends. The most popular of the waterfalls in central Bali is the Tegenungan waterfall. Tegenungan is a social and very familiar place.

There is an area to play with the fun posters and take photos with the waterfall in the background. There’s also a swing for the perfect Instagram photo of Bali. Another couple of our favorite waterfalls near Ubud are Leke Leke Waterfall and Tibumana Waterfall. Both are simple but relaxing waterfalls accessible to the whole family.

Walk through the rice fields

Another pleasant walk is along a flat path through the rice fields towards Sari Organik Farm and Restaurant. Sari Organik is now closed, but there are plenty of other cafes along the way where you can enjoy a drink or meal with a view.

Try Cafe Pomegranate, Dragonfly Cafe, or Joglo Organic. Ubud Yoga House is also right on this road. An alternative route is to start at the other end of Jalan Kajeng and walk the other way to the rice field. The drawback is that motorcycles circulate on these narrow paths.
Shop at the art market

After Ubud’s talented artists and artisans have finished their carved statues, paintings, clothing, or other handmade products, they bring it all to market. Ubud Traditional Art Market and Sukawati Art Market are among the best markets in Bali to buy authentic souvenirs at affordable prices.
Dining at Locavore

Locavore is the most famous restaurant in Ubud, if not Indonesia. After winning a variety of awards, this is the place to go if you want to try the best fusion food. Chefs Eelke Plasmeijer and Ray Adriansyah cook locally inspired dishes using local produce and serve tasting menus that can include up to nine courses. This is the most popular thing to do in Ubud.

Meals here typically last over three hours and you can also choose dishes with wines to ensure you get the most out of your meal. Most of the dishes are fusion based, mixing local elements with foreign techniques. Famous dishes include smoked catfish and pork shoulder, and of course, you’ll need to book in advance if you want to visit.

Puri Saren Agung

The Ubud Royal Palace, officially Puri Saren Agung, is the palace of the royal family of Ubud and one of the most famous landmarks in Ubud. Built during the reign of Tjokorda Putu Kandel with well preserved Balinese architecture and lovely gardens, it is well cared for by his heirs.

The Royal Palace in Ubud is best known among Balinese art lovers as one of the main venues for traditional dance performances. Every night, the Puri Saren Agung stage features angkul-angkul art performances with gamelan percussion orchestras.
Visit Pura Taman Saraswati

This quaint little temple is dedicated to the Hindu goddess of wisdom and art named Dewi Saraswati. To that end, you’ll find beautiful carvings of the goddess throughout the building, as well as fountains that spring from the front of the temple and fill a large, transparent pond area.

The pond is covered with lush lotus flowers and it is customary to bathe or drink the water to harness some of the goddess’s power.

In the evenings, when the temple is lit up against the night sky, dance performances are also held here, which are even more magical than during the day.
stay out of town

Ubud does not make the best first impression.

We stayed in the city center for the first few days wondering what the hell we were going to do there.

The center is overloaded with traffic, tour groups and souvenir shops. There are gems to be found, but to get the most out of your stay, we highly recommend staying outside of the center, ideally somewhere with a view of the rice fields.

We moved 3km out of town and ended up staying for almost five months and coming back for another five months the following year. Relaxing by our pool overlooking the rice fields or the jungle is the highlight of Ubud for us.

There is a wide variety of accommodation in Ubud, from budget homestays to luxury resorts.

Tegalalang Rice Terraces

Possibly the most popular things to do in Ubud and definitely the most famous rice fields in Asia.

The Tegalalang Rice Terraces are located in the center of the island, just over a 20-minute drive from the city center.

It will be an early wake-up call, but sunrise over the lush green fields and palm trees is an epic way to start your day exploring Ubud.

The natural rays of the sun peeking through the palm trees and bouncing off the rice fields are truly magical.

Take a walk, watch the local farmers at work, even hop on the zip lines and jungle swings if you’re feeling adventurous.

There is a specific point of sunrise that has become very popular for taking pictures.

Once you enter the Tegalalang grounds, go to the back of the fields.
Of museums and galleries

With all its quirks and charms, Bali, and Ubud in particular, has captivated and inspired countless talented artists.

Now tourists can enjoy some of the best works by some of the world’s greatest in Ubud’s many art galleries and museums.

The Blanco Renaissance Museum houses the master’s works of art in its own villa overlooking lush tropical jungle, while the Agung Rai Art Museum and the Neka Art Museum showcase diverse collections by renowned and contemporary artists from around the world.
Campuhan Ridge Hike

Ubud is a bustling and busy city, but it is surrounded by natural beauty. Take the Campuhan Ridge Walk to escape honking cars and crowded sidewalks.

It’s a man-made stone path that takes you up a hill, through trees and tall grass.

From this vantage point, you have a breathtaking view of the surrounding landscape and see vast green spaces.

It’s a breathtaking sight and there are also soothing sounds of the water cascading down from the depths of the hill.

The trail is a little over a kilometer long, so allow about an hour for the round trip at a normal walking pace. The path does not make a loop.

When you reach the end you have to turn around and go back the same way. This means you can make the walk as long or as short as you like.
Tirta Empul Temple

If you are looking for sacred places in Bali, this is the perfect place for you.

Do not miss the opportunity when you visit Ubud Bali Discover the famous Tirta Empul Temple. Tirta Empul is a complex of temples with a mountain spring in the city of Manukaya in Bali.

The temple complex was built around 960 AD, it is also a silent observer of the years of the ancient Balinese Kingdom, especially the time of the Warmadewa dynasty.

Other Adjacent and unmistakably on a slope is the Presidential Palace, Istana Tampaksiring, built during the country’s first president, Soekarno.
Last words

We hope you enjoy some of these suggestions for things to do in Ubud.

But remember, if you can’t get out of your lounger overlooking the rice paddies, don’t feel bad.

Ubud is best explored at your own pace.

Ubud pampers the body and mind of its visitors.

The fine restaurants and spas here will delight and relax the senses.

Walking through the lush rice fields and watching the colorful processions of women gracefully balancing mountains of fruit offerings on their way to the temple are lasting impressions and simply breathtaking.

To best experience the nature of Ubud, you should choose an accommodation that is located outside the center of Ubud, somewhere between the greenery and the sounds of nature.
