Procedures and Penalties.
With the advent of online schooling several problems have arisen.
As is normal a few students will always find a way of avoiding attending school. They will also avoid ways of attending online schooling.
It's easy for a student to say the Internet is bad and that's why he didn't attend or do their homework and projects.
I teach my two boys that “Every problem has a solution. Every solution is time money or a combination of both.”
The solution to this problem is time and money.

Most students and teachers in Bali are using the Telephone Company provider.
Lately they have proven to be inconsistent and often not available at all.
Often they have very low upload and download speeds.
There are other services available which I installed in my office recently but are unavailable in my home on the beach.
One solution if you are stuck with the Telephone Company provider is to call them and ask them how many devices are online right now?
If you find there are more devices than the children in your home then the first step is to disconnect those other devices and install a separate line just for them for example for Mom and Pop or other people in the home.
Check your download and upload speeds by using a program such as https://www.speedtest.net/.
If you find that your download and upload speeds are not even close to what you're paying for contact your provider, complain, and find out what the problem is.
If you have more than one student online 10 Mbps will not suffice. You may want to increase to 30 Mbps to 50 Mbps.
The new service I use can increase it to 100 Mbps upload and download for almost the same price.
What to do when the Internet fails during online schooling:
The Internet no matter what provider will occasionally fail or drop to an unacceptable levels.
Although parents and the students may contact the teacher later and say that they are off-line because of Internet failure I am noticing from the traffic on our boys school sites that there are several students who consistently use this as an excuse.
It is much like saying you had a headache when you were young and in school to avoid class.
Understandably the teachers are obviously sceptical and tend not to believe most of the children using this excuse especially the ones that are using it all the time.
So, the teachers are faced with the quandary of should they mark the child as absent or inactive or accept the excuse of the student?
I think all parents and teachers will have to agree that accepting this excuse every time from the student is unacceptable unless it is backed up with evidence.
I just sat down with my teenagers, and we came up with a possible solution so that the student can prove that they were off-line because of technical difficulties with the provider and not doing it on purpose.
I would thoroughly invite any more input on this procedure to tune it even better for the sake of the students and the teachers.
Procedure for when a student is knocked off-line by the Internet provider:
The student must take the time to follow this procedure
1 (1) Screenshot : When you are not on-line take a screenshot of the problem. Make sure it has a timestamp so that you can convince the teacher that the Internet went off-line at the time of online schooling.
(2) Send: Send a copy of the screenshot to your teacher as soon as you can to prove to the teacher that it was not your fault that you were not in attendance.
(3) Confirm:
Make sure the teacher provides you a written confirmation that they received
your screenshot and that they accept this as an excuse.
(4) Reconnect : Reconnect to your online schooling ASAP and send a message to your teacher with a screenshot that you are back online.
5 (5) Make sure the teacher does not mark you as absent.
Many schools such as the school my children attend are considering upwards to 30% of the overall final mark for each term based on how well they do during the daily online schooling.
So, this is very important to ensure that your children obtain good grades.
I have set up certain rules and penalties for certain things not done by my child for online schooling.
Drop me a request at lbptbali@gmail.com and I will share it with you.
The major penalty is to take away devices for online gaming and chatting.
Depending on how bad the infringement is they may lose their phones and computers for nights or even weeks if they do not follow the rules.
I hope this has helped parents, teachers and students to improve their online schooling experience so that their children may absorb as much knowledge as they can during these dire times.
This Pandemic shall pass, and I have a gut feeling that everybody will be back in the school in the first quarter of 2022.
Cheers Lawrence
