Heavy rains in the Greater Jakarta area on Tuesday morning once again put parts of the capital under water. One of them was Karet Sawah, a kampung located right in the midst of massive development along Jalan Prof. Dr. Satrio in Setiabudi, South Jakarta. Floodwater in Gang Santai, one of many tiny alleys in the area, was waist-deep at many spots and lingered for a whole day.
Susanto, 65, a resident of Karet Sawah who has lived here for three generations, said Tuesday's was the fifth "big flood" the area had seen since 1955. "This doesn't happen very often, only five times in my lifetime," Susanto said as he lifted his dog, Browny, to a table to save it from still-rising water.
Some residents of Gang Santai chose to remain inside their flooded houses while others sought shelter at a security post or a convenience stall.
"Hopefully the power outage won't last too long this time," Susanto said. During the city's frequent floods, State Power Company (PLN) would cut off electricity to prevent electrocution.
The flood on Tuesday affected all of Jakarta's five administrative cities (North, South, Central, West and East Jakarta) and also nearby Bekasi in West Java and Tangerang in Banten.A woman braves the floodwater in Karet Sawah.
