Inside the world's most luxurious brunch
It's one of the most celeb-frequented resorts on the island, with past guests including A-listers Fergie, Kate Bosworth and Lupita Nyong'o. It lays claim to having the most Instagrammable swimming pool, ever – a boast backed by some of the world's foremost luxury authorities, including Vogue. It's even been named the numero-uno beach resort in the world by Conde Nast.
Yep, it's the kind of place where guests need not lift a finger – not even to, say, open a toilet lid (they flip open and flush using motion detectors) or swat a mosquito (staff regularly spray the sprawling 30-hectare grounds with mist to keep the pests at bay).
And while this all sounds glorious, none of these reasons are what brings us to Nusa Dua's The Mulia today. We're here to eat.
Specifically, we're here to road test another fittingly grandiose claim – that of hosting the world's most luxurious brunch (it's a tough gig).
(The Mulia)If you've been to Bali in recent years you may have noted the island's newfound obsession with the boozy Sunday brunch, with top-tier resorts all in the ring, trying to out-brunch one another with lavish spreads and bottomless drink packages.
Mulia's famous brunch resides within the resort's signature beachfront restaurant Soleil. We arrive for the main event appropriately hungover, opting for the standard drinks package (around $95 / 959,000 rupiahs); this includes as much soft drink, juice, tea, house wine, beer and select cocktails you can swill before 3pm.
Perhaps sensing my current state, our waiter fast-tracks the welcome beverages – a sweet, mouthwash-blue cocktail 'special' and a seriously spicy bloody Mary.
Like giggly school children, we start by doing a lap of the room, plotting our brunch attack. For their Sunday spread the room is specially set up with multiple buffet-style tables, each bursting with artful displays of every food imaginable. Do we start with the seafood and salads, pile up a cheese plate, or pillage the glistening carvery?

The impressive 'oyster bar' features a tower of shellfish on ice. (The Mulia)There's the towering oyster bar, featuring cascading tiers of lobster tail, crab, king prawns and oysters on ice. A staggering cheese and charcuterie section, overloaded with French wash rinds, Italian cheddars, cured meats and a bread station stacked with whole loaves, ready for slicing.
There're pan-Asian bites, spit-roasted meats, fondue fountains, and fried chicken. And let's not forget the Balinese specialties, including a truffle honey-dijon-glazed whole ham and racks of the local-style pork.
If you make it to dessert, a cheery yellow sweets station offers a dizzying selection of cakes, glossy fruit tarts, pastries, chocolate-coated strawberries and an eye-catching pageant of dessert pots.
(The Mulia)And if the choice for which foodstuff gets to take up precious stomach real estate isn't difficult enough, there's also an a la carte menu (I KNOW), heaving with lavish made-to-order options, from seared foie gras to freshly grilled octopus. AND servers ferrying around complimentary small plates from the chef. Phew.
