New airline offering direct trips from Melbourne to Bali

The airline responsible for jetting Schapelle Corby back to Australia is about to take flight from Melbourne Airport, offering the cheapest direct trips to Bali.

Malaysian-based carrier, Malindo Air, is preparing to launch with daily runs from Melbourne to Denpasar starting in June.

The airport has said the introduction of the airline, which already flies out of Brisbane, will help satisfy the growing demand for Bali holidays.Melburnians will now have a new choice of airline when travelling direct to Bali. (9NEWS)

“Per year we’ve got about half a million Victorians travelling to Bali,” Chief of Aviation at Melbourne Airpot Simon Gandy said.

While it's not advertised as a "budget airline", Malindo is currently offering the cheapest flights from Tullamarine to Denpasar at $530 return*.

Its competitor Garuda is offering deals from $624, Jetstar has one for $695 while Qantas's price for a return ticket is $735.

The roll-out of Malindo comes as Melbourne Airport launches its new free passenger pick-up zone.The first 10 minutes of parking at the pick up zone will be free. (9NEWS)

Drivers can park for free for free for 10 minutes; beyond that, you'll be automatically charged.

It's $12 for half an hour park, $4 more than the standard drive up parking fee.
