Mount Agung eruption turns Bali hotspots into ‘ghost towns’$1 billion is expected to be lost in tourism as travellers abandon the island.
As hotels sit empty and businesses are forced to close, Bali locals are counting the cost of Mount Agung’s volcanic activity.
Almost $1 billion is expected to be wiped from the Balinese economy by Christmas as a direct result of the eruption.
It’s been almost a week since flights last left Perth bound for Bali due to the ash cloud spewing from Mt Agung.

Business owners in Bali say those fears are behind a significant drop in tourism numbers, impacting the economy.
Simon Ward, who owns Bali Food Safari, says he’s seen bookings drop by 70 per cent.Mount Agung is set to cost the Indonesian economy around $1 billion.Picture: 7 News
“Some businesses that I know of are reporting $100,000 losses in just one month,” he said.
“One of our partners has a beachfront location and did six covers on their Sunday brunch and that has the capacity to hold over 150 people.”
Another business owner said his restaurant normally takes in about two million Rupiah each day – but right now, he’s making around 300,000.
Hotels in hotspots Kuta and Seminyak have been likened to ghost towns as tourists choose to holiday elsewhere.

Hello Everyone,
The two rare, small cyclones offshore of neighbour Island Java that were reversing the trade winds here for a week and caused three days of airport closures have now dissipated.
Today the volcano is not even smoking, but probably will continue.
Mount Agung 2017-12-04-07:30 Hrs
The most important thing is that without the cyclonic influence the Tradewinds have returned to normal, which pushes all ash away from Bali into the North far away from the airport and Bali' most popular Tourist Areas, of course.
The Airport is back to full status since Thursday and operating every day without any closures although a few low cost, bad reputation, airlines are using the volcano as an excuse to cancel flights.
So all looks good.
If you have any questions please feel free to ask.
Cheers, Captain Lawrence lawrenceptbali@gmail.com
