New plan for Bali ground zero

A new proposal for the site of the 2002 Bali bombings hopes to transform ground zero into a memorial site that will host local and international peace events.
For almost 15 years, those involved with the Australian-based Bali Peace Park Association have been pushing for the site of the former Sari club to be transformed into a memorial for the 202 people, including 88 Australians who died on October 12, 2002.
But after years of battling with the landowner over access to the site, they reached an "impasse", the association's president, Nick Way says.
Now the association - in partnership with the Bali charity Yayasan Isana Dewata - hopes a new proposal submitted to Badung Regency in August will finally see the site redeveloped.
Under the plans, initial ideas for a memorial will be replaced with a museum telling the stories of "friendship and resilience" that have arisen, as well as a retail space and restaurant.
A study centre, which would host Indonesian and international peace events, is also proposed for the site.
It's planned that employment at the park will be drawn first from the victims of the bombing and their families.
Mr Way, who covered both the 2002 bomb blasts and the subsequent attack in 2005 for Channel 10, said it was about "looking to the future without fear" and remembering those killed.
"There are people who are 15 years old who have no idea what happened there," he says.
