The tree-planting event, which was kick-started by President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo in November, saw 6,500 farmers breaking the previous record of 223,000 trees set by the Philippines.
"The recognition should motivate us," Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya said in a statement on Thursday (12/01).
The plant-a-thon was in line with the ministry's commitment to restore drainage basins, or watersheds, and the annual Plant A Tree Day celebrated across the country. Watersheds are vital in forest and water resources management.
Trees do not only help to keep water in the basins, but also prevent flooding.
"We hope that in the future, we will be able to foster the domestic biomass industry to improve the local communities' economic conditions," said Hilman Nugroho, director general of the ministry's watersheds and forest protection department.
The growth of the planted trees will be monitored.
