Scammers have been utilizing the internet to pull off some pretty slick scams lately.
Several months ago, I noticed a complaint on our Google website page about us taking money from a client for a deposit and not refunding it.
Upon further inspection, we discovered that someone had used our company name to advertise that our villas for rent at a very low market price and that people would have to send a deposit to confirm.
It appears that these same types of people are utilizing Facebook Marketplace to trick trusting buyers into making the same kind of deposits.
I am embarrassed to say that I was personally taken by one of these fraudulent people this week.
Here’s an example of what you want to be careful of on the internet:
I wanted to buy some Daikan air conditioners that were selling at a little bit below normal market price.
I contacted the seller and told them that providing I could see the units and that they were of the years and manufactured location that I wanted, I would buy them.
He agreed to deliver them the next day, and installation was included.
Although I didn’t need installation because I have my own AC staff, I went ahead with it anyways.
Everything was set for delivery the next morning with no prepayment.
But then he called back and said he would like a small deposit for the materials he needs to buy to install the air conditioners.
At that point, I went into his profile and checked out his company.
I saw that it had good testimonials and was a valid company.
Therefore, I felt comfortable sending a small amount of money, which was no more than 600,000 IDR (around $USD 40).
I told him I would have my wife transfer the funds. She made the transfer while we were on the road, and for some reason, it appeared to go through.
But we had a call soon thereafter that the funds did not arrive.
So we made another transfer assuming there was an internet connection problem, etc.
Finally, it went through, and we assumed that the seller would fulfill his promise to buy the material and arrive the next morning with the units.
The next morning, he did not arrive.
We tried to contact him, but his WhatsApp line was off. His name is Faisal. and his phone number is +62 858-8581-4142
It was then that I realized I had broken my own rule of "assuming nothing and trusting no one".
The funds went to his bank account, which had a completely different name than the owner of the company he showed on his Facebook profile.
I had my staff go over and check out the company, and it turns out this person was a fraud.
Anyways, it was a small amount of money but a lesson well learned.
And I’m just wondering how many more people this person has taken for all sorts of products - perhaps furniture, deposits for villa rentals, etcetera.
The bottom line is: don’t transfer any money to anybody until you receive the product or service.
I think banks need to get involved in cutting down on this type of fraud by prosecuting people because the money did go into a bank account and the person immediately took it out electronically.
By the way, one telltale sign of a scam is when after there’s commitment to transfer money, the seller becomes frantic or sometimes aggressive about receiving it.
Another telltale sign is if something looks too good to be true - if something is selling for 20%, 30%, or 50% below what everybody else is selling it for - it’s probably a scam.
