Over the past 23 years that I've lived in Bali I have constantly been pleasantly surprised by the Balinese honesty and caring.
Yesterday I started out very sad as it was my birthday and my wife Azizah had to rush off at 5 AM in the morning to her mother who was hospitalized in Java six hours away.
I was sitting in my home office feeling sorry for myself since I usually celebrate my birthday in style and then suddenly there was a knock on the door.
When the door opened there was my management staff from PT Bali Affordable Lifestyles International and PT Bali Luxury Villas with a birthday cake in hand.
They had come on several different motorcycles and vehicles all the way from our Sanur office approximately 12 km away to wish the boss a Happy Birthday. I had to hold back the tears.
After I change of shirt to try to look respectable we sat down, and they sang Happy Birthday in English and Bahasa Indonesian.
Many thanks to my long-time staff including, Yanthi, Putu, Ratih, Annie, Jero, Komang, Wayan, Gede, Wayan for this extra special effort to cheer up a very sad Boss on his Birthday.
I always call them and the rest of our 70+ professional staff family because they take care of each other and my family as well.
This is also why we have kept all of them working 50% or more during these time trying times during the COVID-19 Pandemic.
