As Predicted the Canadian dollar rises dramatically against US dollar.

 The readers of this blog are aware that the last 12 months I have been very bearish on the U.S. dollar against many currencies, especially the Canadian dollar.

My main reason for the bearish opinion is that America's massive National Debt has increased dramatically from 19 trillion when Trump took office to over 28 trillion in just the last five years. 


It is estimated as of today that an average American's share of this national debt is now $84,772 the moment they come out of the womb.

American tax  taxpayers  share of the debt is $225,309.

In essence the America is going bankrupt, and the U..S dollar is vastly overvalued.

Lats year this led me to believe that one of the strongest currencies to buy to benefit from a falling dollar was the Canadian dollar.

Not because it is the currency of my home country but because it is tied closely to commodities, oil prices, and strong financial markets. All of which have been rising dramatically since last year.

In just the past year the U.S.D.  has dropped significantly. Roughly 16% against the USD in  just a little over a year.


I just noticed today that the US dollar has just hit a major support level at approximately 1.21 U.S. to the Canadian.

I frankly expected the U.S.D. to  drop through that support area sometime in the next couple months.

When it does it could go all the way down to par value at one Canadian versus one USD.

Friends and relatives thought I was crazy keeping 90% of my savings in Canadian dollars recently.

Now they do not understand why. I have made 16% in just one year leaving it in the bank.

There are several banks in Bali and Indonesia that will allow you to open Canadian currency accounts.

This is a good way to protect your future.

Thailand and Bali race for Southeast Asia’s 1st digital nomad visa

Earning high foreign salaries in cheap tropical locations? 


The popularity of the digital nomad lifestyle has been skyrocketing and with Covid-19 teaching many businesses that telecommuting works, it will only increase. 

Now, Thailand and Indonesia are in a slow-motion race to lure these lucrative travellers with the first digital nomad visa in Southeast Asia. 

Currently, many people work online from their beach houses and tropical Villas on Thai islands and in Bali – in fact, the islands are among the most popular destinations for digital nomads – except the vast majority are technically working illegally. 

 Notwithstanding the challenges of travel during the Covid-era, the digital nomad is the biggest workplace transformation in motion at the moment. 

A digital nomad is someone that works remotely from anywhere in the world with an internet connection, untethered by a desk in an office and free to roam around the world. 

Freelancers often relocate from their expensive home country economies to countries that offer cheap subsistence, thus reaping the best of both worlds – their country’s high salary and their host country’s low cost of living. 

It’s been called the most lucrative and fastest-growing migrant worker trend of the digital era by Nikkei Asia. 

Unlike the past when travellers and backpackers could score local gigs in low paying jobs like farming or bartending, digital nomads earn strong salaries allowing them to live abroad nearly endlessly with more disposable income than the average backpacker. 

Most digital nomads flock to Asia on visa waivers or tourist visas which generally do not allow any type of work. 

But last month Indonesian Tourist Minister Sandiaga Uno spoke kindly of a long-term Visa that allowed work, clearing a path for legalizing the digital nomad lifestyle. 

The tourism minister came around to the idea when he himself became a digital nomad, taking holidays from his office in Jakarta to work from Bali and rejuvenate. But the current laws forbid foreigners from enjoying Bali in the same way. 

There are 57 foreign monitoring teams that are searching for digital nomads and busting them for violating Visa restrictions. In Thailand, on the other hand, the Centre For Covid-19 Situation Administration approved a plan to give up to a 4 year visa to digital nomads and allow them to work legally. 

The scheme falls under the current Smart Visa program created to attract experts in science and tech fields as well as foreign money investors for things like real estate and startup companies. The idea was to attract the best and the brightest in emerging fields and technologies to live and work in Thailand. 

But authorities have been stingy handing out the Smart Visas, with only 625 issued over the last 3 years. Still, the construct of the visa would be a perfect launching point to reimagine into an option for digital nomads, bursting the floodgates and allowing these desirable tourists to live and work legally in Thailand. 

This alluring tourist demographic of a traveller who can afford to spend money in the local economy for long periods of time is drawing pandering attention from many countries. Barbados, Dubai, and Estonia have visa offerings to allow digital nomads to work there legally. 

 But Asia has not caught on to the trend yet, with freelance online work generally being illegal. 

Until Thailand or Indonesia or both enact these plans they’ve been kicking around, digital nomad work doesn’t qualify for a work visa and doing any form of labour without the proper visa is forbidden. 

While both Thailand and Indonesia are slowly coming around to the idea and opportunity of welcoming digital nomads legally in their countries, no concrete policy or time frame have been announced or approved and either country. 

It remains to be seen who will win the race for Southeast Asia’s first digital nomad Mecca.

When will International Tourists Return to Bali?

 Many of the social media posts lately are from people from all over the world wishing to travel to Bali.

With so many conflicting reports in the news no wonder they are confused, and they constantly want to know the truth.

Here is my answer based current sources of reliable, published news coupled with my 23 years experience of running a business in Bali. I also have the knowledge derived from 17 years as a director of a Luxury Hotel and Tripadvisor Hall of Fame award winning villa complexes plus 17 years of running one of Bali’s most successful real estate and development companies.


As I said to my 70+ staff in January the worst is over, and it is only going to get better in the future. 

“Worst is over and it's only going to get better in the future.”


After almost one year of COVID - 19 radically damaging Bali's tourism and many people struggling to survive they looked at me with blank eyes as if to say, sure we have heard this before.

The key event that led my positive attitude for the first time in many months was the approval of the first vaccines in the latter part of 2020.

It was obvious to me that after the vaccines were approved and showing efficacy of as high as 90%. 


The light at end of the tunnel became very bright.

I always remind my staff that “Every problem has a solution. Every solution is time money or a combination of both”.

It was obvious to me that a lot of money will be spent over a short time to rectify the worst pandemic in over 100 years.

Most of the world was sceptical in the first month or so especially in Bali.

Then last month Pres. Jokowi made the courageous move to snap up vaccines in the early stages and set out an aggressive inoculation program.

 He instructed his team to focus on areas in the nation that were economically damaged such as Bali which relies 85% on tourism.

Bali’s Gov Koster and his team initiated a brilliant plan that none of us saw coming.

 Hotel’s clinics hospitals and even the local Banjars made their facilities available for the Governors teams to come in and inoculate as many people as possible in the shortest time.

 Frankly, we were all impressed with how rapid they were able to inoculate all our staff.

In fact, my first hint that vaccinations were available in Bali was one of my fellow tennis club players who is a very high-ranking government official. He published photos of him being vaccinated on our group.

Within a few days I too was vaccinated. My partner and Spouse Azizah and I have now received the second shot.

 

 The real estate market started to ignite as smart investors snapped up bargains on Bali real estate at 30% to 50%. discounts and those discounts are still here but will not last long.

Even during Easter, we began to receive a few villa rentals and staff began to realize that the return from the abyss was beginning.

Just this past week we have been inundated by travel agents from China, Korea, and Russia requesting prices for short-term and long-term rentals.

Last week as I was sitting at my office desk watching Bloomberg news and the Minister of tourism for Indonesia announced to the world that his goal was to open Bali to international tourism as early as June and at the worse July. Subject to everything going according to plan.

Indonesian Ministry of tourism Sandiaga Uno announces on Bloomberg News  to the world that he hopes to open up international tourist arrivals as early as June or July subject to everything going well.


In conclusion we have had a couple of false starts before but that was before most residents and workers of Sanur were vaccinated.

There is sure to be some minor setbacks, but I sincerely believe there is an 80 to 90% chance that we will have international tourists back to Bali as early as June and at the latest July. Just in time to catch the high season.

We must remember that this year Bali moved up from fourth place to number one tourist designations in the according to TripAdvisor, the largest online travel agency in the world. 

 

Let us not forget that Bali is one of the least expensive places in the world.

Soon it will be one f the safest places from COVID -19 in the world.

I know that families will certainly consider safety more important that inconvenience of perhaps having to do a five-day quarantine in a luxury hotel.

Hotels such as the Hyatt Regency right across the street from our luxury villas has been chosen as one of the first luxury hotels in the green zone for the five-day quarantine.


Once that five days is over I am sure they will take the next week or two to stay in places such as our Bali Luxury Villas starting as low as eight dollars per person now. It will probably still only be $20 per person in June and July.

Smart travellers will book reservations that are fully cancelable including the airlines so they can be the first to return to Bali and perhaps escape harsher quarantines in their own countries.

The one thing I am virtually 100% convinced of just like after the Bali bombings and the volcano eruption that in the extremely near future Bali will come back to normal and in the coming years surpasses previous tourist arrivals.

So, what should you do?


You should book reservations to Bali starting as early as June providing you have the 100% right to cancel airplane reservations with a full refund as from hotels and other attractions you book. 

In my opinion the worst-case scenario is that you may have to delay a month or two .

Real estate investors if you do not see the benefit in buying properties at 20 to 50% off frankly you should never consider investing in real estate.

Knowing that Bali is one going to be one of the first resort areas in the world be free from COVID - 19 and that it is the number one sought after destination the world right now demand will only increase in the future.

So, like I said to my 70 + staff in January the worst is over, and it should only get better exponentially from now.
