Bali plus world news and views Editor's Comments:

Below is a copy of our monthly memo that we sent out to our Bali Luxury Villas Owners in Sanur for the month of February.

We thought we would share it with you because it provides a lot of very positive news on the COVID - 19 pandemic and the future of the Bali travel industry.

I hope you enjoy.

 Bali Luxury Villa Onwers Memo

 Feb 2021

___________________________________

Dear Bali Luxury Villa Owners,

We hope as always you and your family and friends are all safe and healthy.

At the beginning of the year, we advised our 60 + staff and you that we believed the worst is over for the COVID – 19 Pandemic.

We based that prediction on the fact that there was one vaccine approved and that others were pending approval at the time.

What is it really Like in Bali Now?

Two weeks ago, one of our clients from Australia, who is seriously considering buying a beachfront property in Bali to live in at least half of the time sent us the following very frustrated message.

"We are in a 5 day lock down atm because some UK cases related to Melbourne hotel.

So we cannot leave our homes.

What is the real situation in Bali with COVID-19 cases an restriction living there .

We hear different views of it here."

Improvement Worldwide:

Even though the United States reported the largest number of deaths in one single month afew days ago, now topping over 500,000 from COVID -19, we still maintain that things are improving around the world.

One only must look at the chart we published yesterday on Facebook. Based on statistics provided by https://www.worldometers.info/about/
The number of new cases worldwide has almost dropped by half since January.

Just yesterday another new, even better vaccine, has been approved for emergency use in the United States. It ismanufactured by the famous and exceptionally reliable firm, Johnson & Johnson.

The company that we grew up with relying on their products for babies has taken their time to really analyse and test their vaccine under real conditions including the new variance of the disease.

Most important assuming that it was going to be approved they have already begun manufacturing, months ago.

Because it is manufactured in America it will probably very quickly be able to provide a large amount of over 300 million vaccine doses required there.

Add to that the fact that several vaccines such as even the Russian Sputnik vaccine, that everybody laughed at it first, evidently has an over 90% efficacy rate meaning that over 90% of the people that are vaccinated by it will be cured.

Better News Every Day in Bali:

In just the past two weeks practically every day there has been more and more good news coming out especially about the possibility of Bali opening its borders to International Travellers for the first time since March of last year.

There are rumours from the press that the recent 4.6 million purchases of the Chinese vaccine by the government announced by Pres. Jokowi may be destined for Bali in the coming weeks.

Although nothing is confirmed it is evident by the fact that the government has signed up our hotel workers and most others in the state online for a vaccine shot that this is a strong possibility.

Travel Corridors for Foreign Tourists

Is it destined for Bali? What we know for sure is that Travel Corridors are going to be put in place shortly probably starting with China which has had little or no COVID - 19 cases since almost one year now.

I spent a lot of time publishing articles that are postive for Bali, Indonesia and the world.

You may want to grab yourself a refreshment sit down at your computer and read at least the ones I published the last two weeks. The Links are below.

The bottom line is we believe that there is a particularly good chance that we may see International Travellers begin to arrive in Bali in the second quarter, perhaps even as early as Easter.

Remember that just a few weeks ago it was announced by TripAdvisor the largest
online travel agency in the world that Bali is the most sought-after destination in the world this year. It moved up from fourth behind London, Paris and Greece to the number one position.

Travellers have spoken and they all want to come back to Bali.

One only must-read Facebook posts from around the world daily for people  who see a photo of Bali and they simply cannot wait to come back.

I believe when the doors open up to International travelers floods of tourists will come in.

After all you might just as well spend your vacation in Bali which may be one of the safest places in the world as opposed to home in miserable cold wet conditions.

Nobody knows the future, but I have been surprisingly good at predicting  the past, so we look forward to beginning to enjoy increasing rentals for your Bali Luuxry Villas along with increasing the rates in the extremely near future.

Hang in there this too shall pass.

In the meantime we have set up all the government protocols including handwashing stations, banners etc. to receive what we believe will be an influx of tourists in the  future.

It is important as always to keep your Villas in great shape so we will be focusing on inspecting and ensuring that every villa is up to our standards.

This may require a some funds from you but will be certainly rewarded in the near future.

For those of you villa owners that are staying in Bali for Nyepi, Bali's Day of Silence on March 14th. sadly there will not be any Ogoh, Ogoh parades this year.

verything else will pretty well be the same except for the following COVID - 19 protocols that must be followed.

Click this link for the Full Blog : Five protocols implemented For Bali’s Nyepi 2021 - Ogoh-Ogoh Parade Cancelled

As always thank you for your trust and confidence in managing your staff and your rentals.

There's no question in our mind that 2021 will be definitely much, much, much brighter than 2020.

Remember that after the last pandemic in 1918 and 1919 they had the roaring 20s when everybody who have been locked down for several years started travelly and partying.

Tenative Rules for Bali’s Nyepi 2021 - Ogoh-Ogoh Parade Cancelled

Good morning everyone on this rainy morning in Bali.

Sadly, for the second year in a row we will not be able to enjoy one of my favourite days in Bali Nyepi, otherwise known as the “Day of Silence”.

For the past 23 years that I have lived here we always look forward to the night before Nyepi which is basically the Balinese New Year’s Eve.

We loved the huge parades of evil looking paper Mache monsters which would be carried around by frantic villagers turning viciously in circles, sometimes almost injuring the onlookers, to scare away evil spirits.

The next morning at 6 AM no one was allowed to leave their home until 6 AM the next morning.

The idea behind this is to scare away the evil spirits the night before and then basically make it look like nobody's home the next day, so they don't bother coming back.

Normally most homes and businesses throughout Bali would turn off their lights,TV and have no fires so that the spirits think that nobody's home.

The next day would be consist of visiting relatives and a day of fun and games.

The rules for Nyepi 2021.

Lately many of my villa owners have asked me what are the rules this year?

Frankly it's hard to find out. Normally I would just have to ask my trusted driver, or my staff and they would advise me what's going on.

The following is all I have been able to find out so far.

The only thing for sure is that there will not be any Ogoh- Ogoh parade this year.

Proof of that is the fact that there have not been any Ogoh- Ogoh monsters being produced in each of the Banjar’s throughout Bali which usually starts 2 to 3 months in advance.

I wouldn't be surprised I'm still asked for money for them though. I will let my Indonesian wife deal with that.

Below are some of the rules that have been put forth.

What we know is Nyepi is a day to take a break from telephones, television and Internet and enjoy your family and the environment.

It is a time to enjoy the Absence of modern day sounds such as motorcycles, cars and trucks.

Instead enjoy the same sounds that the Balinese have been listening to for centuries.

Listen to the birds, chickens, farm animals, and yes even the barking of dogs meowing of cats.

At our home we will enjoy the sound of pounding ocean and still be able to wander around in our complex viewing the beach and ponder the next year.

Nyepi Special

Luxury Villas & Beach Front Estate Starting at Rp 312,000 per Guest.

We have several large 1–4 Bedroom Bali Luxury Villas with large private swimming pools, DVD’s and large kitchens only a 8 min walk from the ocean starting as little as Rp 312,000 or $22 per guest per night.

We also have one luxurious estate in a beachfront complex.

Your family will love your own private 14 mtr. swimming pool.

You will hear and may view the ocean from this Estate. There I plenty of rum to trek around the complex which is the totally legal under the rules.

This 1- 4 -bedroom estate is available for a minimum of two nights.

That would be March 13 and March 14 for a price of RP 1,900,000 per night.

Therefore, if you have six persons in four bedrooms with five bathrooms that's only RP 316,000 each or roughly $21 USD. per night

There is only one available so can't call or whatsapp me soon to be assured of getting it at 08123814014.

I will provide an update to my clients and to my readers in the coming weeks on any further changes in the rules and regulations put forth for this year's Day of Silence celebration which will take place on March 14 th. English translation.

Here are the current rules according to this article in Inews.id

The Ogoh, Ogoh parade that became a tradition of Nyepi Day celebrations in Bali this year was abolished.

The decision was based on the high case of Covid-19 in Bali and the implementation of restrictions on community activities (PPKM)

English translation.

The banning of the Ogoh, Ogoh parade was decided jointly by Parisada Hindu Dharma Indoneia (PHDI) Bali with the Bali Indigenous Village Assembly through Circular Letter (SE) dated January 19, 2021.

"Pengarakah Ogoh, Ogoh is not a mandatory series of Nyepi Holy Day, therefore the Ogoh, Ogoh parade on the Saka Year Nyepi Holy Day 1943 was abolished," said the chairman of PHDI Bali, I Gusti Ngurah Sudiana in a written statement, Wednesday (1/20/2021).

He explained, the policy of banning Ogoh. Ogoh marches by the public is also based on The Governor Regulation (Pergub) of Bali Number 46 of 2020, and Instruction of the Minister of Home Affairs No. 1 of 2921 on PPKM. Nyepi Day falls on March 14.

He said the banning of the Ogoh, Ogoh parade was inseparable from the consideration of some existing regulations.

Not only ogoh-ogoh parade, Melasti, Tawur, and Pangrupukan ceremonies that are also a series of Nyepi Holy Day are asked to follow health protocols in their implementation.

1. First, he said, is the restriction of the number of participants. At most 50 people.

2. Second, religious worshipers use clean 'paniratan' to sprinkle tirta to the people and give bija with clean equipment.

3. The third is forbidden to sound firecrackers or similar mercon.

4. Fourth, for those who are sick or unwell are not allowed to attend the ceremony.

5. Fifth, comply with all health protocols. "For other people in Bali to jointly support and succeed the pelakasaan Nyepi, he said.

Bali Deputy Governor answers question "When will Bali Open Border ?" to International Tourists in Webinar with Tourism Leaders

Editor's Comments:

Plans appear to be moving quickly to reopen Bali's international border to foreign tourists.

Two days ago, we published news that Indonesia’s President Jokowi had announced that they had just purchased 4.6 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine. One reporter stated that the goal was to vaccinate the entire island population of Bali which is approximately 4.6 million soon.

That news has not been confirmed by the Jokowi administration but the next day our hotel PT. Bali Luxury Villas experienced first-hand online registration for our hotel employees as well as ourselves.

This led to the conclusion that  the government was preparing for mass inoculations to prepare for allowing international tourists back into Bali for the first time since March of last year.

"When will Bali Open Border ? "

There was further clarification during a webinar with Bali’s Deputy Gov. Cok Ace and leading travel industry government and experts yesterday.

Several statements were made that are extremely specific.

The title of the webinair was "When does Bali open border. "

Below is a Google translated article published in the popular Bali Post last night.

One particularly important statement in the webinar was that the Deputy Governor explained that “the FCC program to allow foreign tourists who have completed implemented vaccines in their country is already allowed”.

Frankly, I do not think too many people are aware of this and I have not had any confirmed reports of any International tourist being allowed into the country just because they have an inoculation certificate.

But this was one of the steps that I said needed to happen in a lengthy report (see below) I published a few days ago.

In that Blog I layed out in detail step by step what I thought must happen to end Bali's near depression business environment.

In step 4 of my recommendations below I stated " Simultaneously bringing the 4.6 Astra Zeneca Doses and inoculate everyone on Bali starting with the healthcare workers, the elderly over 60, those with preconditions.

Then all those who are on the front line of the tourism industry such as hotel restaurant & transport workers."

Then after everyone is vaccinated I stated.

"We need to change the rules so that nobody enters Bali on an airplane or ship without proof of vaccination by one of the top vaccines.

7.     Finally, a DPR test when they arrive at the airport.

8.     Then Bali could be one of the first premier resort islands in the world to be Covid-19 Free  like New Zealand and Australia where they  are almost COVID - 19 free.

9.     Then tourists would swarm to Bali because as Tripadvisor, the largest travel site in the world revealed Bali is “The number one sought after destination in the world” for the.

I was overly excited to see that the Bali and Indonesian has already set up a program for this procedure according to the Webinair.

China May be First International Tourists:

It was also reported in the Bali Post article that the Deputy Governor believes that China may be the first to take advantage of Bali's new policy allowing those with vaccinations to come into the country.

Since China has successfully managed COVID - 19 since the second quarter of last year they of course would be among the safest tourists to allow into Bali.

As a footnote I believe tourists from Australia, New Zealand and manay Asian Countries would also be extremely safe since they have virtually eradicated COVID - 19 in their countries

As I predicted 12 years ago China will probably be the number one tourist to Bali in 2021 and perhaps beyond.

editor Lawrence predicting China would be number one tourist to Bali 17 years ago

The Google translated article of the webinair is below followed by articles that I wrote the last few days which are optimistic that inoculations will take place very soon.

Perhaps Bali can then become the first COVID - 19 free resort Island in the world.

Editor's Comments:

As I mentioned in my blog yesterday Bali may be the first resort  in the world to be Covid-19 free based on an announcement by the president Jokowi that they had purchased 4.6 million doses of the successful AstraZeneca vaccine and were going to distribute it to a specific place.

A reporter stated that it was destined for Bali which makes sense because we have a population approximately 4.6 million.

Although it is not confirmed what is confirmed is that they are going to start to vaccinating hotel staff very soon.

I know this firsthand because our hotel PT. Bali Luxury Villas staff will be vaccinated including yours truly and my wife Azizah who is an owner and director.

After living here for 23 years I can tell you that it's is almost a sure bet that the federal government and the Bali government have big plans for Bali to get back online soon.

Then Bali can meet its reputation of being nominated the most sought after destination in the world this year by Tripadvisor.

Further confirmation of what I've just stated is in an article published yesterday below.

Over 10,000 tourism workers register for COVID-19 vaccines as officials push to prioritize battered industry

An online registration open to tourism workers in Bali this week has so far attracted over 10,000 people, an official said, as it pools the number of people who would potentially benefit from a prioritized vaccination program for the battered tourism industry.

Bali Tourism Agency Chief Putu Astawa said that a dedicated website was launched on Monday, and has so far received 10,500 entries as of yesterday. Online registration will remain open until the end of this month.

“This data will be used to propose to the Health Ministry so that [tourism workers] can get the vaccines,” Astawa said.

He claims that vaccinated tourism workers will help boost trust among travelers, while citing Bank Indonesia data that puts the total number of workers in the tourism industry and small and medium enterprises sector at 1.2 million.

Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno also suggested this week that Indonesia’s 34 million tourism workers ought to be prioritized for vaccinations against COVID-19, saying that it should start as early as next month with a kick-off in Bali.

Bali is targeting about 663,000 people for the province’s second phase of vaccinations, prioritizing those who are considered more vulnerable to the coronavirus and more likely to interact with the general public. This includes the elderly, educators, market sellers, and reportedly thousands of tourism workers, including staff at hotels and restaurants.

KONTAN.CO.ID - JAKARTA . The Indonesian government will bring in a corona virus vaccine (Covid-19) produced by AstraZeneca.

The vaccine will arrive around the end of this February.

"At the end of February or early March, there will be 4.6 (million doses) of AstraZeneca out again," said President Joko Widodo in an official statement, Saturday (20/2).

The vaccine is planned to be used in a limited way in one province. "

"Only this is still in discussion at the Ministry of Health whether this will be devoted to a province itself so that management management is easier, this has not been decided yet," Jokowi explained.

The arrival of the AstraZeneca vaccine increases the number of vaccines prepared by the government for Covid-19 vaccination. Previously, the government brought in a vaccine produced by Sinovac.

The Oxford/AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine: what you need to know
11 February 2021

The WHO Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE) has issued interim recommendations for use of the Oxford/AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine (AZD1222).

Vaccination can be offered to people who have had COVID-19 in the past. But individuals may wish to defer their own COVID-19 vaccination for up to six months from the time of SARS-CoV-2 infection, to allow others who may need the vaccine more urgently to go first.

Who is the vaccine not recommended for?

People with a history of severe allergic reaction to any component of the vaccine should not take it.

The vaccine is not recommended for persons younger than 18 years of age pending the results of further studies.

What’s the recommended dosage?

The recommended dosage is two doses given intramuscularly (0.5ml each) with an interval of 8 to 12 weeks.

Additional research is needed to understand longer-term potential protection after a single dose.

Is it safe?

While this vaccine has yet to be recommended for an Emergency Use Listing by WHO, it has undergone review by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and consequently meets WHO’s criteria for SAGE consideration.

How efficacious is the vaccine?

The AZD1222 vaccine against COVID-19 has an efficacy of 63.09% against symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Longer dose intervals within the 8 to 12 weeks range are associated with greater vaccine efficacy.

Does it work against new variants?

SAGE has reviewed all available data on the performance of the vaccine in the settings of variants of concern. SAGE currently recommends the use of AZD1222 vaccine according to the WHO Prioritization Roadmap, even if virus variants are present in a country. Countries should assess the risks and benefits taking into consideration their epidemiological situation.

In the meantime, we must maintain and strengthen public health measures that work: masking, physical distancing, handwashing, respiratory and cough hygiene, avoiding crowds, and ensuring good ventilation.

Editor's comments:

The light is getting brighter at the end of the long and winding tunnel.

This could be exciting news for Bali. In fact, the best news for over a year.

The Facts About a possible solution to Bali's COVID - 19 Crises.

What we know for a fact is that President Jokowi just advised the press that Indonesia is bringing in "4.6 million doses of AstraZeneca Vaccine in late February or early March".

This means in a few weeks there will be 4.6 million doses of tone of the most effective vaccines for coronavirus.

Is it a coincidence that Bali's population is approximately 4.6 million and their bringing in 4.6 million doses?

Is a press source correct when he said that it “will come to Bali”?

This we do not know because there is always a lot of rumours on the coconut wireless in Indonesia.

But it would certainly make sense to inoculate all the citizens of Bali because we are an Island, and we can limit to a certain degree the amount of Covid-19  coming into the Bali.

Bali Close to Depression:

My observation this week after driving around Kuta and Seminyak is right now if they do not do something quickly Bali may go into a depression.

One only must travel to the Southern areas of Bali's tourism centres to see how desperate things are.

Possible Steps to Take to Bring Tourists Back.

Just off the top of  my head this is what I would do if I were in charge.

1.     First and foremost, I would put a serious professional police force at all port of entries to Bali including Gillimanuk, Padangbai, & Benoa.

Recently there has been a lot of news about counterfeit vaccine certificates etc. I am sure a lot of them are slipping through the net because it is physically controlled by normal port personnel who are sadly overwhelmed with this new challenge.

 2.     Man, the ports with some of Bali’s finest police, military or perhaps even national police who are highly trained in areas such terrorism etc.

3.     Provide some sort of motivation for them to catch as many people as they can with artificial counterfeit certificates and those trying to circumvent this system.

 4.     Simultaneously bringing the 4.6 Astra Zeneca Doses and inoculate everyone on Bali starting with the healthcare workers, the elderly over 60, those with preconditions.

Then all those who are on the front line of the tourism industry such as hotel restaurant & transport workers.

5.     Once everyone is vaccinated they should not have to worry about being infected. The only place they can be infected is from primarily Indonesian truckers etc. coming through the ports and Indonesian domestic tourists plus International tourists which at this point are not allowed.

 6.     We need to change the rules so that nobody enters Bali on an airplane or ship without proof of vaccination by one of the top vaccines.

 7.     Finally, a DPR test when they arrive at the airport.

8.     Then Bali could be one of the first premier resort islands in the world to be Covid-19 Free  like New Zealand and Australia where they  are almost COVID - 19 free.

9.     Then tourists would swarm to Bali because as Tripadvisor, the largest travel site in the world revealed Bali is “The number one sought after destination in the world” for the first time in  history.

10.  Then a huge influx of domestic and international tourist would generate substantial incomes from taxes for not only the Bali government but for the National government.

Also, the National government would no longer have to provide any more financial support as I they have recently. Therefore, that money can be directed to other areas of Indonesia.

 11.  That money can be used to purchase vaccines for the rest of the populace of Indonesia which is over 300 million people on 17,000 Islands. A daunting task to be sure. But one that can be achieved.

As I always say “Every problem has a solution. Every solution takes time, money or combination of both.

In conclusion I believe this is a great idea to isolate Bali by vaccinating everybody and then heavy controls on everyone that comes in to make sure they are COVID - 19 free.

Now the problem comes in implementing this  difficult policy but perhaps the importation of 4.6 million shots of the best vaccine in the world will be a good start.
