Since remdesivir became the first medicine shown to have an impact on Covid-19, doctors, politicians, and Wall Street investors have engaged in a tense guessing game: What would its maker, Gilead Sciences, charge for the drug?

Now there is an answer.

For all governments in the developed world, including the U.S. government’s Indian Health Services and the Department of Veterans Affairs, Gilead will charge $2,340 for a five-day course.
U.S. insurers, in addition to Medicare and Medicaid, will pay 33% more, or $3,120. Countries in the developing world will get the drug at greatly reduced prices through generic manufacturers to which Gilead has licensed production.

Indonesia Claims Airline Price Collusion Among Garuda Indonesia, Lion Air, And More

byHaneesa Begum June 29, 2020

**Update: 06/29/20 @ (08:20) UTC – Garuda Indonesia’s President Director has responded to the price collusion incident; details below**

Seven Indonesian airlines were found guilty of price collusion in 2019, according to conclusive findings by Indonesia’s antitrust regulator. The Komisi Pengawas Persaingan Usaha (KPPU) revealed in a statement on Tuesday that it has decided not to impose a fine for the airlines due to the current COVID-19 situation.Garuda Indonesia and six other airlines violated anti-monopoly laws last year.

According to an official document sent to Simple Flying, Garuda Indonesia, Sriwijaya Air, Citilink, Lion Air, Batik Air, Wings Air (Indonesia), and NAM Air orchestrated price collusion last year. These airlines took part in anti-competitive practices, implementing falsely inflated airfares.

Although seven airlines are implicated, they belong to a collective of three holdings – Garuda Indonesia Group, Lion Air Group and Sriwijaya Air Group.

Stay informed: Sign up for our daily aviation news digest.
Price collusion affected domestic tourism

In the official statement by KPPU, “concerted action or parallelism” occurred, which led to a simultaneous hike on all airfares. These actions go against anti-monopoly laws.
Advertisement:

The violation by these airlines reveals that this was not an independent action but rather a “meeting of minds” agreement. Thus, these airlines had a mutual understanding to eradicate discounts or consistency of discounts. Instead, the carriers “limited supply and maintained high prices on scheduled commercial air transportation services” for travelers in Indonesia.

CH-Aviation reports that these three groups have power over 95% of the domestic market. As such, the price-fixing undeniably resulted in a negative impact on the local travel industry.
No fines for the seven airlines

As the virus outbreak has dramatically affected the market environment for aviation, KPPU will not be fining the airlines for the malpractice. Garuda Indonesia, for instance, has been struggling amid the crisis – finding ways to restructure bonds amounting to $500m. Currently, Garuda has secured a payment extension for the bonds, Jakarta Globe reports.

Although guilty of price collusion, KPPU states that there is no evidence of any cartel-like actions that took place. According to the authority,

“The Reported Parties have absolutely no ability to determine their production and marketing because all matters relating to opening, closing or reducing the route, slot, or frequency licenses are determined by Government.”

KPPU calls for all seven airlines to submit a report before any price adjustments are implemented. Photo: Getty Images

In place of financial penalties, KPPU has come up with an alternative course of action. Moving forward, all seven airlines must disclose in writing any increase in airfares before putting it into effect. The authority also calls for the government to make way for new airlines into the mix, enabling competition.

Garuda Indonesia has responded to the incident. In a statement sent to Simple Flying, President Director Irfan Setiaputra explains that the carrier “understands that a healthy business environment is an important foundation for the airline industry ecosystem to continue to be competitive.”

“Garuda Indonesia Group will also focus on achieving optimal business performance in line with the efforts to implement the principles and provisions of fair business competition,” Setiaputra adds.

Garuda will thus abide by regulatory policies going forward.

Simple Flying has reached out to the other two holdings for comment but did not hear back before publication. We will update the article once a response is received.
How are these airlines linked?

As aforementioned, the airlines involved control 95% of Indonesia’s domestic aviation market.

Garuda Indonesia is the state’s flag carrier, with budget Citilink as one of its subsidiaries. Garuda is no stranger to dubious situations after its former CEO was found guilty of bribery and money laundering, sentenced to eight years in jail last month.

Lion Air Group is Garuda’s rival, helming low-cost airline Lion Air. Batik Air and Wings Air are subsidiaries under the airline.Lion Air is Indonesia’s largest carrier, which came into fruition 20 years ago. Photo: PK-REN via Wikimedia

The last holding concerned is Sriwijaya Air Group, headquartered in Jakarta. The group operates Sriwijaya Air and NAM Air. Privately-owned Sriwijaya Air is Indonesia’s third-largest carrier, flying to mostly domestic destinations and limited international services. Citilink previously took over the reins of the airline from November 2018 to December 2019.

What do you think of the price collusion incident? Should KPPU have imposed a fine on the airlines? Let us know in the comments.

New Demand for Bali Real Estate the "Bali Digital Nomad"

Editor's Comments:
Editor Lawrence - President, Director, Realtor, Developer
See More >>> http://bestasiarealestate.com/about-b-a-r-e/
Just the other day I met with a couple who had just rented one of our Bali Luxury Villas for the year.
She is a Canadian like myself and he is an American.

They explained to me that they lived in Beijing and still had two children and family there. They got stuck when they came down to Bali for the Chinese New Year and couldn't arrange a flight back.

They have now decided, after spending a week in our Bali Luxury Villas with good Internet connections, fresh air everything within walking distance they really don't need to go back to Beijing.

They can become a new class in Bali, the "Bali Digital Nomads

"New class of Bali, the "Bali Digital Nomad"

I believe during the coronavirus lockdowns a lot of people are discovering they don't need to go to an office to work in their chosen profession.

The American husband for example said that he normally works from his home wherever he is in the world.

His wife has discovered that she can now do her job from her home as well.

Now all they have to do is for wait for their two children to be able to come down, which probably will be in the near future, as international travel from China should open up as early as next month.

This is good news for Bali as Digital Nomads, along with what I believe will be a huge influx from Baby Boomers who want to live a life of luxury with private maids and a cost of living  70% less then their home country will be the next groups to settle in Bali.

They will also will be the next major demand for Bali real estate, creating another bull market.

This will take the pressure off the tourist industry and real estate markets.

In the future Bali will not be so sensitive to things such as volcanoes and world economies.

Yet another example of the saying "Every adversity, every failure and every headache carries within it the Seed of an equal or greater benefit"
This couple discovered they don't have to live in a expensive, crowded, polluted, stressful city like Beijing when they can live in Bali at a fraction of the cost and still do their job.

Digital Nomads like them will share their experiences with friends, relatives and others throughout the social network and soon there will be an influx of digital nomads to Bali.

Popular Bali shoots "Digital Nomad" with great potential
Listen to this

JAKARTA--the opportunity is always open, anywhere and anytime. Although the Corona virus pandemic (Covid-19) Chastens to date and has destroyed various business sectors, especially tourism, there are new opportunities that can be developed ahead.

Many corporate executives in the world who become accustomed to working from home (work from homes — WFH) and apparently businesses can walk. That means, business can be run from afar through the help of technology that is increasingly sophisticated so it is not always have to come face to face with employees and relationships.

Technology has made it easy for them to work even in the difficulty of this pandemic. They are referred to as Digital nomads.

The digital Nomad was accustomed to working anywhere, especially in a safe and convenient area as well as having the support of good and stable means of communication. They, executives and business controllers looking for a place to fulfill a passion can work quietly, without the distractions and noise of major cities.

The new situation that seems to motivate the government to develop tourism Bali is aiming for new opportunities. Ambassador RI to China Djauhari Oratmangun participated in the idea of Work from Bali to investors in a seminar titled China Enterprises Going Global Risk Conference: 2020 Global Investment Services Forum and Foreign Embassies and Overseas Industrial Parks ' Promotion Information Release in Beijing, some time ago.

"Tagar Work from Home during a time of pandemic has the opportunity to become a Work from Bali Pascapandemi," said Djauhari. For foreigners, he said, working from Bali provides its own benefits. In addition to the cost of living relatively cheaper, quality of life is also more assured because of the environmental sustainability that is maintained.

The Seminar was attended by 50 participants with a seating distance of approximately 4 meters each, which was followed online by 2,000 people from various companies and business associations in China was held by Jiang Tai International Associates (JTIA), an organization that is affiliated with various Chinese investors. JTIA's main task is to identify potential destination countries and provide recommendations for companies that will invest overseas.

Bali Deputy Governor Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardana Sukawati said "working from Bali" potential developed on the island of the gods. "Pandemic COVID-19 is the right momentum. This pandemic on the other hand produces new habits, work not merely from the office. Working more healthy, more fresh, without the need to rent a office or crowded in elevators, "said Wagub who was called Cok Ace when opening the Webinar series #5 with the title" Road Map to Bali Next Normal Imagine Working From Bali, Why Not "in Denpasar, last week.

"I so remembered the story of a French citizen who in the period of a year can be twice a visit to Bali in a long time span. Apparently he did deliberately work from Bali. Living in Bali to take care of his company with a small laptop capital, and a simple Villa terrace in Ubud, "said Cok Ace.

From the story, he is able to do the "working from Bali". This opportunity can be developed as a new tourist destination in Bali, namely by developing a "working space" that is adequate for tourists like this. Moreover, Bali has a big capital for that matter. Firstly, the air is relatively clean with steady weather throughout the year. Then, breathtaking scenery, white sand, blue skies, is a real "clean" embodiment.

Bali has its own vibration, a "healing power" that is obtained from various ceremonies carried out almost every day. Provide tranquility for anyone. In the aspect of safety and comfort, Balinese people are very famous for their hospitality, hospitality. The Balinese are very accepting the difference and as long as it does not cause offense, it will be very easy for an outside person to be comfortable in Bali.

So the idea of attracting digital nomads to work longer in Bali should be supported as this is a breakthrough with good prospects. The potential is large and estimated in a year Indonesia can attract foreign exchange of US $2billion from this segment. If successful it is an inspiration for other areas to campaign for similar ideas.

In the future certainly not just Bali that can be developed to meet the needs of the executives of large companies of the world. In Indonesia, many locations can be developed, which must be prepared by the Government well, especially the facilities and infrastructure of telecommunications, comfort and security as well as adequate accommodation. Best friends enjoy coronavirus pandemic break at Bali beachfront

It wasn't a mass gathering at a nightclub or a yoga centre.

It was just best friends and their families on a Saturday afternoon in Bali at Bali Paradise Beach Estates.

One of the saddest things of the coronavirus pandemic has been that family and friends have had to isolate themselves.

Knowing that we are all are safe and have no signs of coronavirus we decided to meet at Bali Paradise Beach Estates for a weekend getaway.

One of the stars of the day as always was Angela Murray who in fact was in her mother's womb staying at this very estate almost five years ago.

Lawrence shown here was in the hospital room hours later after she was born.

As usual at this time of the year the magnificent 5 to 10 meter Bali kites were flying overhead in the strong trade winds coming in off the Indian Ocean.

Lawrence and wife Azizah took the opportunity to have a sunset photo next to the ocean.

Mother Joy Murray and shy daughter joined them.

Son Darius joined mother for another Kodak moment.

The day would not be complete without both sons and their mother so Xander joined in.

Joy couldn't resist and also joined.

Mom, Azizah, a Bali Notaris looked stunning as usual.

Both moms soon got into the shooting mood.

Angelia was just not in the picture taking mood.

Then it was time for both long time families to join in a memorial shot. Father, Patrick Murray finally joined.

Son Aldon, Dad and mom

Another beautiful day at Bali paradise Beach Estates.

You too can enjoy a similar ambience for a special coronavirus price starting as low as eight dollars per guest.
https://baliworldnewsviews.blogspot.com/2020/06/coronavirus-special-huge-bali-luxury.html

Mom Azizah retreated to the main house to begin dinner.

Fortunately she had lots of assistance from Patrick Murray a  hotel manager and previously a chef at a Michelin Starred restaurant in the U.K.

The whole family enjoyed a delicious unique meal of imported scallops and young roasted.
Both were cooked to perfection.

Another fabulous evening with our great friends hoping that soon we will be able to enjoy restaurants and nightclubs together once again.

In the meantime as I mentioned above you too can enjoy similar ambience for as little as eight dollars per person per night.

Bali Breaking News - Covid 19 cases hits 10 million Milestone worldwide with one half million deaths.

Good Morning from Bali, Indonesia.

The Western world will wake up in a few hours to some extremely sad News Headlines that Coronavirus, COVID -19 cases worldwide will have now reached 10 million and that roughly 5% of those cases have passed which is almost 500,000 deaths.

The latest statistic is that it worldwide there are 9,903,777 cases and 496,796 deaths.

This horrific pandemic which we warned about as early as January 19th. when few even  knew it existed is now one of the most dangerous pandemics in history.

And it's not getting any better worldwide. As you can see by this graph it has been increasing exponentially.

It is currently increasing at an average rate of 4% per day worldwide.

While the country where this virus first broke out, China has seen a levelling off of new cases for the last 67 days the rest the world is increasing exponentially.

I believe after six months of watching the news and Charting the cases and deaths daily the most important statistics is not how many cases a country has, because many can fudge or simply don't have the capability, facilities or budget to test a lot of people.

If you follow Donald Trump's logic last week he stated he told his people to stop testing so much because the statistics look so bad.

We'll talk about Trump on another blog and how his total incompetent handling of this crisis has led to America now having the largest amount of cases in the world.

To me as a family man with two young children the most important thing  is how many deaths are there reported per million population of a country

That statistic is not hard to confirm because reporters are constantly combing the morgues, the hospitals and documenting accurate statistics on how many people actually died from the virus in the last six months.

U.K. one of Highest % Deaths in World:

As you can see below the United Kingdom has the title of having one of the largest amount of deaths per million population in the modern world at 640. Only San Marino, Belgium, and Andorra have higher rates.

Spain, Italy, Sweden, France also located on the European continent are also very high.

So that kind of takes away the argument that the countries with the best healthcare should have the least amount of deaths.

I personally believe one thing that leads to higher death rates in the Western world is the modern society with its lack of exercise and poor diets. Countries with  unhealthy out of shape citizens will have the highest death rates.

Even my own home country of Canada has 225 deaths per million people.

Indonesia & Bali Among Safest Countries in the World.

Frankly I feel much safer even in the most dangerous areas of Indonesia which only has a death rate of 10 citizens per million population. This ranks them as 109th on the list of the most dangerous countries in the world.
Many will argue that deaths are not recorded properly in Indonesia, and they may be right. But even if it was twice or three times as much at 30, 40, or 60 it would still be much less than the United Kingdom's  640 deaths per million population.

And finally we come to where I live now Bali which I've been saying since day one "Bali is one of the safest places in the world to live during this pandemic".
"Bali is one of the safest places in the world to live during this pandemic".

Although we've seen exponential growth in the last couple weeks, in the hundred 117 days since we've had our first case  we've only had a little over 1,200 cases and only 11 deaths which is just a little over two deaths per million population.

"Little over two deaths per million population"

Again the critics will come out and say there's more than that. They're probably right. So if the government statistics are only 10% correct that means there could be 110 deaths again compared to America's 300 deaths and UK 600 deaths per million population we are still safer than them.

Which makes me feel  quite comfortable in the decision I made to not go around the world for my very important birthday next month and stay right here at home.

The bottom line is this. The Bali government is working feverishly on getting things under control with the help of the local village Banjars and local village police.

In just the last few days they closed down and deported a Syrian who held a massive yoga get together with no social distancing and no masks.

A nightclub who was featured on viral video on the West Coast of Bali was also closed down and the owners appear to be in serious trouble with the government.

Gradually Reopening Bali.

For the next  six months I expect now that there is domestic travel allowed on airlines that many people from Jakarta and other major cities throughout Indonesia will want to get out of their apartments, no matter how lavish they are and come stay in a home, villa or hotel suite in Bali in the very near future.

They will forgo their  trips as I have to Europe and other places for fears of catching viruses on long-haul flights. They will not feel comfortable with the high rate of deaths in foreign countries. especially countries such as the United Kingdom Europe and the United States.

Hopefully sometime in August, September or October international flights will begin to realize what I have stated above. Bali is one of the safest places the world and with proper new normal protocols hotels will be able to safely entertain international guests once again.
Pray that I'm right for the sake of the Balinese and the Balinese hospitality industry.
