Denpasar mayor urges city residents to stay at home amid coronavirus outbreak

The Mayor of Denpasar yesterday urged the city’s residents to refrain from returning to their hometowns and stay at home instead, as part of an effort to curb the spread of COVID-19 in Bali.

“I am asking all residents living in Denpasar for the time being do not go anywhere, including to go to your hometown, stay at your respective homes [instead] to break the chain on COVID-19 spread,” Denpasar Mayor Ida Bagus Rai Dharmawijaya Mantra said, as quoted by state news agency Antara.

Many of those who live in Denpasar hail from different parts of the island and even the country. With the social and physical distancing advisory in place and the option to return to their family homes might make sense financially, officials fear it might contribute to further spread of COVID-19.

According to Denpasar government’s official website, there are currently 96 people under monitoring in the city, along with two patients under observation and two more who have tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

Across Bali, the total number of positive COVID-19 cases stand at 10 as of yesterday afternoon, including two deaths of foreign nationals, while a total of 141 patients have been placed under observation, as per data from the provincial government.

“Our success in breaking the chain of coronavirus spread requires discipline and cooperation from everyone, not only the government, but also the public in heeding the instructions and suggestions from officials,” Rai Mantra said.

Last week, a nurse who tested positive for COVID-19 reportedly went home to Tabanan regency while waiting for her test results, prompting officials to trace her close contacts immediately.

As you can see by the photo above I am following the mayor of Denpasar's advice to work at home if at all possible even though I don't live in Denpasar But I do have my hotel and villas there.

Fortunately, my work is primarily computer and communications management. In the last few years with the help of Facebook, WhatsApp email and of course mobile phones I've been able to manage my Hotel and Villas with 100+ staff from anywhere in the world including when I'm traveling.

I know some of you are saying, well it's easy for you to do!

You're in an air-conditioned office sitting in an extremely comfortable Lazy Boy chair With your remote keyboard, mouse and large monitor to prevent you from hunching over a computer and being sore all over. And you would be right.

Many of you assume that I have a maid waiting on me hand and foot Normally in my past 22 years here I would have but unfortunately we are short one maid right now. If anybody wants a job we are great bosses.

Instead,  my beautiful wife Azizah, a professional Notaris in Bali who normally would be in her office is at home helping for 2 to 3 hours every day as our two boys receive homeschooling from the Gandhi International school. 
She has used this time at home to learn how to cook and has been preparing some meals that are more and more exciting and delicious every day.

When I finish here I will be doing my own version of the cooking, utilizing my four years as a chef and 17 years as a restaurant owner to cook some Italian chicken à la Lawrence.

Yesterday I had my driver take me into the office, ( he wears a mask and gloves before even gets in the car) because it was payroll and unfortunately that's one thing I can't do on a computer as it has to be signed.
Then when I came home I stripped to my underwear( I know that's a scary thought) left my clothes outside came and immediately washed my hands thoroughly for 20 seconds. 

 I proceeded to my bedroom to shower thoroughly and wash my entire body so I've not brought any virus back in the house. 

Then I make sure that my clothes outside are either hung in the sun to dry and my clothes are washed thoroughly. 

Ignorance Creates Fear:

I know many of you in the 4 million+ population on Bali probably are very afraid of what may come next. And you should be.

The bottom line is this if we don't get rid of this in the next 30 days we will take the risk of losing our entire high season tourism industry. It probably accounts for 90% of the jobs for all Indonesians and ex-pats living here.

Alternatively, die alone with strangers.

 I've been following Coronavirus since day one, when the first 45 cases were announced in China on January 16. 

I've been charting it and advising staff, my clients and the public almost daily.

We Will Beat This if we follow the Protocol.

The bottom line is we can and will beat this, but only if we all try to avoid any contact with anything that may be contagious.
This includes not only avoiding infected persons but perhaps equally or even more important surfaces such as shiny surfaces, including metals and plastics where the virus can live up to 72 days after somebody infected has touched it.
We also have to avoid all other substances such as cardboard, paper and even furniture clothing etc. because it's been proven that COVID-19 can live up to 24 hours on that as well.

Disinfect all Food, Packing and Containers:
Yesterday we instituted a new regime at our house whereby all fruits and vegetables must have the wrappings discarded before they enter our home. 

They then must be soaked in a solution of one part vinegar and four parts water plus some salt. Finally washed off and stored. 

I learned this trick when I was sailing through the Pacific for three years and had to deal with some very dodgy provisions which could have Viruses that most Western people are not immune to.
There are many many other things that I can advise you on.

Knowledge is power and in this situation with the most horrific disease to hit mankind in over 100 years knowledge may save your or your family's life.

What's the Alternative to Quarantine
When you find yourself or others complaining about possibly being locked down or the best case scenario asked to avoid any unnecessary travel think about this. The stories that are coming out of the hospitals around the world where people are being treated by the virus are nightmarish.
If you catch the virus you will not be able to have any contact other than perhaps a mobile phone with your family, friends or relatives. 

If you get really bad you will wind up dying with a bunch of strangers and buried with no fanfare or farewell.
  
That makes it very easy for me to spend 2-4 weeks or whatever it takes to avoid getting this virus by staying at home and being aware and careful about coming into contact with this disease.

Don't be surprised to see a total shutdown of the airport and seaports such as Gillmanuk, Padangbai and Benoa.

Yesterday announced the closure of all restaurants in Chengdu along with the beaches. They are still available for take-out and delivery. All restaurants should and probably will close.

This may sound pretty dramatic, but I thought about it today if we don't get this under control and flatten out the curve of rising cases before the end of May the tourist industry will be dead for the high season July, August September and October.

So do your part to ensure that this doesn't happen by staying at home with your loved ones.

The longer we delay doing this the longer it will take to flatten out the new new case curve and the longer it will take for tourists to feel safe to return to Bali.

Corona Update on Bali 29 March 2020

Coronavirus Update for Bali for  Bali 29 March 2020: 

According to the Bali Province Co-19 Task Force Task Force Chief Dewa Dewa Indra "Until now there are 141 cases of Patients Under Supervision (PDP),"  10 Patients are Positive Covid-19


Until now 100 people have been sampled. Of the 100 people, 90 were negative and 10 were positive Covid-19 .

If I am reading this right that means that only 10% of the patients that were under supervision that were tested for coronavirus were positive.

So, therefore, it is possible to assume that 10% of the people currently under supervision, which is 141, may also be positive. We will know shortly. 

That means that there could be another 14 Positive Coronavirus Patients in Bali giving us a total of around 24.

One thing that most professionals involved in studying this Virus are well aware of is that in almost every country in the world there are far more people that are infected than have been sampled and proven to be positive.

With that in mind we should assume that there will be a lot more cases in Bali in the future.

But what is interesting is that as can be seen by my daily chart there has been zero increase in new cases in the last four days.
So unlike places like the United States where they went from five cases just a few weeks ago when Trump bragged that there was nothing to worry about to now over 140,000 cases and over 2,500 deaths.
We have a significantly slower rate of increase.

We also have 94% less deaths per hundred million population than America but I'm the only one that most about that scientific fact.

Bali Local and Expats must follow Govt.

This does not mean that we should not adhere to government recommendations and regulations regarding coronavirus. 

If you must go do your job as I had to the other day to make payroll for my 100+ staff just make sure that after you touch anything you disinfect your hands with either alcohol disinfectant or even soap and water.

When you come home assume that you have come into contact with the virus. You must Disinfect everything including your body, your clothes and any materials that came in contact with the outside world such as books computers, mobile phones etc.

I have someone in my household bring me a towel before I walk in the door and I strip to my underwear ( which usually generates a few jokes). 

I take the clothes off that I was wearing leave it outside the front door in a bundle to either be hung in the sunlight or washed which kills the virus.

Then I carefully do not touch a doorknob and go immediately to the sink and wash my hands thoroughly and then walk upstairs and have a through shower as well.
What can we expect in the future?
According to what I have been reading the last 24 hours the federal government in Jakarta is drafting documents to shutdown Cities in places that have large multitudes of infected citizens, especially Jakarta.


I believe there's a good chance that the federal government will not allow any travel from major cities to smaller localities and villages to avoid the spread of the disease during the coming Idul Fitri celebrations next month and the lead up to it called mudik.

There is probably a good chance that Bali should and will shut down as well.

According to a facebook friend in the restaurant business there is a directive today to shut down guest services in the restaurant and only provide Takeaway and delivery.

TRIBUN-BALI.COM, DENPASAR - The number of Patients Under Surveillance (PDP) Coronavirus Disease 2019 (Covid-19) in Bali has increased again.
Today, Sunday (3/29/2020), there were an additional 11 PDPs, consisting of 8 Indonesian citizens and three foreign citizens.
Specifically by him, of the 141 people, all of them had taken swab samples.

Until now 100 people have been sampled.

Of the 100 people, 90 were negative and 10 were positive Covid-19 .

"In other words, there is an additional 1 positive Indonesian citizen," said Dewa Indra who is also the Regional Secretary (Sekda) of the Province of Bali .

He stressed, the Provincial Government of Bali would not open the PDP Covid-19 data , both those that were stated negative and positive.

Dewa Indra reasoned, patient data especially related to personal data including individual identities such as names, addresses and telephone numbers that can identify a person and his family, may not be disclosed to third parties.

This is in accordance with the guidelines on confidentiality and data protection in Covid-19 countermeasures to ensure the confidentiality and security of data.
