Made's Warung in Seminyak celebrates its 50th anniversary tonight.

Made’s Warung was established in 1969 and has become a social eating and meeting venue for locals, expats and tourists alike.

It has grown from a traditional roadside warung into a cosmopolitan restaurant serving a variety of local and international food in Bali.

My first memory of Made's was when I first arrived in Bali 22 years ago.

 I asked the locals where was a good restaurant to go for high-quality Indonesian food. Made's was their recommendation.

At the time some Seminyak was just a street running into Kuta and there were hardly any restaurants there.

We were not disappointed. The place had excellent low-priced delicious food and a lot of charm.

And although it seemed like forever to get there from Sanur in those days it was worth the time.

I don't know much about the other 28 years before that when it was started in 1969.

 I can only assume that when it started Seminyak was simply a dusty old dirt road running into the main tourist area of Kuta.

In those days a plane flight from Europe or America would have taken several days therefore only a few high-end tourists would wonder that far.

Thus the majority of the tourists at the time would have been backpackers and surfers?

To have survived 50 Years in Bali is a miracle in itself.

Everyone and their dog thinks they can open a restaurant here.

There are restaurants opening and closing almost every day.

Congratulations to the owners and family of the owners for being one of the few to have survived so long.

Bali gearing up for annual int'l triathlon

JAKARTA, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- At least 2,250 participants from 29 countries and regions are set to take part in the 2019 Bali International Triathlon on November 10, organizers said here on Tuesday.

Some 80 percent of those registered for this year's event are domestic participants, a significant increase from 64 percent last year, according to Andam Dewi, general manager of the event's main sponsor.

"The increasing number of Indonesian participants indicates the growing popularity of the triathlon here. The event is expected to further enhance Indonesia's positive image as a global sports tourism destination," Andam added.

The event this year will be held on Bali's Sanur Mertasari Beach, with the competition set to include an Olympic distance course, a shorter sprint course and a fun run.

First held in 2007, the annual Bali International Triathlon has won numerous accolades, including "Best Asia Triathlon Course 2018" from AsiaTri Magazine and "Best Triathlon 2018" from Sportactiva, Indonesia's largest triathlon community.
