Australian businesses concerned Baby Boomer departure will worsen skills shortage.



Employers must utilise aged workforce.

As Australia’s Baby Boomer generation gradually retires from the workforce, their exit poses a knowledge and experience vacuum that is expected to contribute significantly to skills shortages across the country. 

An independent survey of 620 hiring managers in Australia, commissioned by Robert Half, shows 86 per cent are concerned the Baby Boomer departure will impact available skillsets in their organisation. 

Indeed, 78 per cent forecast it will be more challenging to find qualified professionals in the coming five years.

Australia’s population is steadily ageing, with the number of people aged 65 and over expected to make up 18 per cent of the population by 2029. This will have two concurrent effects on the workforce. 

Firstly, there will be a higher proportion of employees over the age of 65 in the workforce than ever before. Plus, this shift will be further amplified by the Australian government’s plan to raise the age to claim pension from 66 to 67 by the year 2023 to cushion the economic impact of the inevitable Baby Boomer workforce departure, further extending the career span of Baby Boomers in the workforce. 

Simultaneously, 90 per cent of Australia’s 5.3 million Baby Boomers are forecast to have retired by 2029, catalysing a knowledge exodus and potentially creating millions of job vacancies in Australia.

To address the skills shortage, Australian hiring managers are taking several measures to ensure knowledge held by the Baby Boomer generation doesn’t get lost when they retire. 

Developing teams consisting of different generations is the most popular measure, undertaken by 43 per cent of Australian managers, followed by 42 per cent who are implementing mentoring/coaching programs. 

Other steps to harness Baby Boomer knowledge include setting up training sessions with all employees (41 per cent), implementing online platforms where everyone can input their experience (39 per cent), and tracking success of former projects through specialised systems (38 per cent).

“With Baby Boomers gradually retiring from the workforce, there is consensus across Australian workplaces about the impact of their departure, and the need to transfer their unique skills and knowledge to younger generations in the workforce,” said Andrew Morris, director of Robert Half.

 “Leveraging the higher concentration of a mature-aged workforce is in fact the key to mitigating the very skills vacuum their departure presents. In order to best prepare their incumbent workforce, businesses should not only put in place knowledge transfer initiatives, they should also nurture their most experienced employees and consider them a valuable asset in helping organisations prepare for the future.”

How can businesses better utilise and value their most experienced staff members?

Tap into the Baby Boomers’ wealth of knowledge and experience: Create opportunities for Baby Boomer employees to mentor new and lesser experienced staff members. This will help them feel valued as they share their wealth of knowledge with a new generation of workers.

Spark cross-generational innovation: Foster collaboration across generations by setting up sessions to spur cross pollination of ideas between all the generational groups within the business, further boosting innovation as it invites new and different perspectives.

Ensure flexibility is an option: Offering flexible work hours and family leave opportunities can help Baby Boomers – as all workers – maintain a healthy work-life balance. This in turn increases employee engagement.

Offer development and learning programs: While employees nearing retirement are not prioritising significant career progression opportunities, they still seek stimulation and challenge in their role. Training programs should therefore be accessible to all staff. Also consider that Baby Boomers might be interested in lateral or even lower-level job roles, if these positions allow them to learn new skills or provide a new challenge.

Provide health care initiatives: Organising health initiatives, such as annual flu vaccinations, and on-site eye and ear examinations are not only an efficient way to avoid having employees to take time off work, they also serve as an attractive incentive for Baby Boomers.

I've been saying for 15  years in my seminars, blogs and radio shows that us baby boomers are not only 25 % of the population but we control 50 % of the wealth. Finally that statement has been confirmed with this article showing that Australians baby boomers own 50% of the wealth.

Baby boomers, those aged between 45 and 64, may make up less than a quarter of Australia's population but they hold more than half of the nation's wealth. That's according to a study by McCrindle Research, which broke down the household net worth of different generational groups as well. We also found out that the top 20% of the richest Australians hold 62% of the country's private wealth while those at the bottom end of the scale have less than 1%.
The wealth distribution imbalance isn't just a problem the US; the richest 20% of Australians have an average household net wealth of $2.5 million while the poorest 20% have around $35,500; in other words, the richest Australians have 71 times more wealth than the poorest. Wealth includes a combination of accumulated income and assets that are owned.
The median price for a house currently sits at $720,000.
The top 20% will most likely be baby boomers given that they hold 53% of Australia's private wealth. Here's a breakdown of wealth distribution between different generational groups in the country.

    New Bali Luxury Retirement Villas seek Bali God's Blessing

    When people asked me what I did back for my birthday this year I will state we had a blessing ceremony for our brand-new project that I been dreaming about for quite some time.

    Before you start any new project in Bali you must appease the gods by having a Blessings Ceremony.

    So we drove five minutes from our home over to our new location 200 m from one of the best swimming beaches on Bali's East Coast in the village of Saba.
     We chose this location for a beautiful beach and it's brand-new hospital across the street which is major request from baby-boomer  retirees.

     The views from the beach are magnificent all the way over to the channel Islands of Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan. 
    To the south you can see one of the qualities main tourist areas the village of Sanur .
     The beach is only 200 m from our new Bali luxury retirement villas.

     We have a large 3,500 m² property we plan on building eight luxury retirement villas on.

     The beach is so close that you can hear it and see it through the palm trees.
    We brought our two boys along to participate in this very important ceremony.
    I told them that their children will probably inherit this land after the 80 year leases run out.

    The ceremony was arranged by Wayan our housekeeping manager who has worked with us for the past 15 years and a local village priest who did the chant.
     Their assistants were busily preparing all the offerings, which were substantial.
     Finally the ceremony began.
     Not being one who can kneel easily on the ground my entire life I found a good position to watch the proceedings.

      They've must have  done this before because they brought along a small table which could act as an altar

     As a priest chanted his assistants placed offerings in various locations throughout the property.

     Part of the ceremony is to let off three homemade firecrackers which are devised from bamboo.
     A temporary temple was installed on the north end of the property.

     All these offerings are quite colourful and make for some great photos.

     The priest chanted on for approximately an hour.
    The Frangipani trees that are planted on the land bloomed recently making for some great views of what are the owners will see. 

    We concluded that we will not cut them down when we  build the Villas  but instead move them to a location suitable for them. Therefore maintaining the spirit of the land.
     The priest assistants continued to place offerings throughout the entire one-hour ceremony.

     
     Wayan makes some offerings and a special prayer at the temporary altar which will be replaced my permanent one later.
     
     At first we questioned the approximately $200 charge for the ceremony but after seeing all the offerings and the amount of work that goes into it we got more than my money's worth.




     At one point the ceremony called for sweeping around the offerings, perhaps to scare away evil spirits. This was accomplished by one of our accountants Putu to and our Gardner Ketut.
     My wife Azizah poses for a beautiful photo as usual. 

    I'm very fortunate guy to have this woman who is not only beautiful but also very intelligent with a Noaris degree and Cum laude Law Degree.

    Most important she is very supportive of us taking on a new project at this time in our lives. 
     Near the end we were required to place several offerings in  hole and then place concrete around the offerings. 

    Perhaps symbolically laying the foundations which we will begin next week
     AfterAzizah I was next.
     Followed by our elder son Xander
     Who was followed by our younger son Darius.

     Next was one of our key staff Gusti.
     A lovely photo of our family on this property which will be leased out to foreigners for up to 80 years and then finally turned back over to our children or their children who were born and raised in Bali and have Indonesian passports.

    Therefore the land will continue to be held by Indonesians hopefully forever.

     Foreigner buyers will come and spend 10 to 20 years here then sell their lease to another foreigner or past them on to their heirs for another 10 to 15 years and so on until the end of their 80 years of leases.
     These foreigners who are fifty five or older will usually contribute heavily to the local economy by hiring staff and usually participating in local charities ect.
     Finally it's time for everyone to pray and be blessed individually with flowers and drops of water plus traditional rice on their fore head.
     Our Assistant Manager Gede appears to be asking for special blessings from the God's for success in this next venture.
     Our brilliant architect Wisnu also seeks blessings from the Gods for success in this venture which he has designed to complement the environment.
     Then the ceremony ended as it started with chants and prayers for a successful venture that everybody benefits from.
     One of our oldest staff Yanthi our sales manager gives a peace sign of approval for the project.
