Yesterday my family and I went on an all day adventure to the North East part of Bali and visited places that I haven't even seen in my 21 years of living here.
We started out our at Bali Paradise Beach Estates and continued up the Bypass Baru pass towering Mount Agung volcano which just erupted a few days ago but was very silent today
In a little over an hour we arrived at the Water Palace, a former palace in Karangasem Regency, Bali. Now, this palace also known as Ujung Park or Sukasada Park. It is located approximately 5 kilometres from Amlapura. Wikipedia
Thsi Palace was basically a getaway for the Kingdom of Karangasem, one of Bali's major regencies.
It was still early enough in the morning to shoot great photos the perfect lighting, at a time when there was hardly any tourists around.
The assistant manager later advised us that due to the recent Volcanic actively that tourists visiting the site were down as much as 80%.
Our two boys who complained from the moment they woke up about going began to really enjoy the ambiance of this former residence reserved for only Kings.
An inexpensive ride around the the building where the King use to come out and rest provided for some extraordinary beautiful pictures. Truly Kodak moments.
One can only envision a hundred years ago the King and his entourage coming down to this stunning spot and the King leaving his family and walking along this beautiful walkway to his private spot for a daily nap.
Certainly a lot better than my small office set-aside with a bed next to my main office, also for taking daily power naps.
The boys enjoyed competing against each other in the paddle boats while Azizah and I basked in the early morning sun.
The building below was evidently a place where guards would stand watch over the nearby Lombok straits for invading enemy from the Lombok Kings
Evidently the main building was probably a rebuild in the early 1900s and had some European architectural influences.
The assistant manager offered to open the King's bedroom, which is usually locked to the public.
It was a very small room with extremely tiny bed that the Kings enjoyed daily naps or perhaps the company of one of his 20 wives.
The assistant manager explained that there's a story about one Indonesian couple who once slept on the bed and then when they returned to southern Bali started acting insanely, speaking like kings.
The curse was only removed after they returned to this bedroom and asked for forgiveness from the king.
Below are just a few of the King's wives. As can be seen in this photo some of them were very young. I imagine the one on the far right was probably no older than 13. In those days at 13, when a woman began becomes capable of having children they were also available as wives.
My family and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and I highly recommend that anyone with children bring them here not only for the beauty and serenity but also for a lesson in Balinese history to learn how the ancient kings lived in total luxury.
We continue our journey on to an area of Bali that I have never been to over my 21 years of living here but always wanted to go to. Continued Remote Roads and Secret Beaches.
