Bali has a theory as to why Mount Agung has decided to reawaken now — because of frisky tourists having sex on the mountain

BALI’S Mount Agung has been at its highest alert level for a week, with experts anticipating a furious eruption at any moment.
The volcano has largely sat dormant since its last eruption in 1963 that killed more than 1100 people, and has been slowly rumbling back to life since August.
And a local priest on Bali has a theory as to why Mount Agung has decided to reawaken now — because of frisky tourists having sex on the mountain, a popular hiking spot.

A priest in the village of Muntig, which sits inside the volcano excavation zone, said the mountain was angry because the “bule” — white people — had sex and menstruated on it.
“The climbers did that,” he said, according to Fairfax.
Steam has been spewing out of the mountain and thousands of tremors are being recorded daily at the volcano.

As of Friday, more than 134,000 people have fled the evacuation zone around the mountain, which is 75 kilometres northeast of the tourist hub of Kuta.
Volcanologists say the escalation in tremors indicates an eruption is more likely than not, although no one knows exactly when, the Associated Press reports.
“I would definitely be following the advice to stay outside the exclusion zone,” said Heather Handley, an assistant Earth sciences professor at Sydney’s Macquarie University.

She said the tremors suggested an eruption was “imminent”.
If and when it erupts, newly installed sirens will sound in several townships.
“If Mount Agung erupts, I’m in charge of pressing the alarm button,” local official Nyoman Kasna told AP.
“Sirens will sound and tell the community the mountain has erupted.”

Tourists are being warned to expect long delays and cancelled flights due to volcano ash, which is likely to affect Bali’s Denpasar airport as well as neighbouring airports in East Java and Lombok.
Flights are still operating in and out of Bali but some airlines are waiving fees for customers wishing to cancel flights.

Among those airlines is Scoot, which said passengers with confirmed tickets purchased on or before September 22 for travel between September 24 and October 2 can re-book to a later date with change fees waived, subject to some conditions.
Passengers are urged to contact their airlines for more information.
Some carriers, such as Virgin Australia, are flying some services via Darwin so they can re-route if things change mid-flight.
Australian airlines are also urging customers to make sure they have passed on their mobile numbers in case they need to be contacted in a hurry.
